MSF at Bentley University - McCallum School of Business

Hello!
Would u prefer to go at Bentley’s MSF with a Graduate Assistanship or go to the BC’s one without any financial aid etc??

labgod’s last post is a great example of how skewed our compensation system is, and how that translates to the decisions of young people. So many of the best and the brightest go into jobs of questionable societal relevance, where they essentially push around pieces of paper (or electronic data), instead of going out and curing cancer. Of course without finance, there would be no funding for cancer research, building the panama canal, buying a home, etc. But few would argue that the state we are in today - with such a disproportionate number of intelligent young people aspiring to be the next Gordon Gecko - is one of equilibrium.

I say this as a willing slave to this capitalist system: a generation ago my father looked at the incentives in place and decided to become a surgeon and save lives, in this era I looked at the incentives in place and dedicated myself to figuring out which company deserves to get some of our client’s capital so that I could make a *****load of money.

Storch, did you just finish reading “The Big Short”?

hah, no, but this isn’t exactly a new concept, Michael Lewis himself was espousing it over 20 years ago

I have been accepted by bentley MSF for two weeks. And can anyone tell me how is the MSF program on earth? Really appreciate.

Bentley has a solid MSF program. Boston is really full of quality programs. Brandeis has more of an international focus, BC has more of a working professional focus, BU has a strong CFA focus, MIT has the dominant brand focus. I would say Bentley will place you well in the Boston area, but you might struggle going outside of bean town.

MSFHQ,

How do you feel about Ohio State’s MSF program? What kind of jobs do graduates of the program typically receive?

OSU is forming their program right now so no placement stats yet. With that said, I think the program is going to be great. They have specialized and relevant program tracks which allow you to focus on what interests you (CFA, FRM, RE, etc). The director is experience in running MSF programs. OSU will be a CFA partner program which is wonderful. OSU is widely know and has a very large and passionate alumni base.

What jobs have MSF graduates from other programs been going into? I am interested in an MSF, however, I have been told that it is a waste of my money to get one, and I am wondering what the MSF would be useful for.

Thank you.

MSF places into analyst roles in investment banking, S&T, Equity Research, F500, etc. It depends on the program you are in, how you network and interview, etc.

Hello,
I have been accepted at Bentley’s MSF with a small scholarship and was all set to go for it. However, I received a 100% scholarship from Suffolk in Boston. I believe Suffolk isn’t very well know for its finance program, but I was just wondering if it was worth considering since it’s free! I wouldn’t mind paying for Bentley if I would have a much better chance of landing a job. I’m restricted to programs in the Boston area only…

I would appreciate any thoughts on this! Thanks!

Hi Ms.T,
As you rightly mentioned for “why Bentley” essay I need some insider and some web sight info. I have tried to dig in Bentley website and found some bits of information. Do you mind sharing some “insider” info. I want to focus my essay on 3 points. corporate finance focus (Faculty seems interested in corporate fin related topics), state of the art technology and other facilities useful for international students. If you could share any facts related to these points it will be great!!
Thanks,

HI MSFHQ,
You never mentioned about treasury or corp finance side in your list. Is it because of less number of jobs or less number of applicant or both?. I am interested in treasury and have some relevant experience. Can u throw some light on that side of career after MSF?
Thanks,

Treasury is great. If you have the experience and you get an MSF I can see it being a readily accessible path. The classes you take in an MSF have a strong relevance to this line of work also.

Thats insightful @MSFHQ!!

Yeah I am planning to take relevant classes in my MSF. Looking for right MSF program though!!
BTW, I like your site. Some great info there.

Glad it could help you man. I remember what it was like when I was in your shoes 4 years ago. Anything I can do to make the decision a little easier I am happy to do.
