MSU admissions-SPRING 2013

Hello,
I'm a college freshman with an application out to michigan state for fall 2012. They will have all required materials/transcripts that they need in mid-may. I am thinking about changing my preferred semester of admission to SPRING semester rather than fall.
My question is this: will this affect my chances of getting?
My grades from this year are very solid. However, since applying for 2nd semester is a strange request, I don't want to fall into a situation where MSU basically says "Theres no room for spring. And now you still can't go for fall either because you already switched your application to spring"
Do you see my predicament? My rank of preferences right now, if I could choose, would be
#1 accepted to State for spring 2013
#2 accepted to State for Fall 2012
#3 Not attend state in 2012-2013 (This would be AWFUL! I want to attend ;)
Any opinions would be welcomed and appreciated! Thanks in advance!! :)

Lots of views but no responses, please chime in! Waters warm!! :)

My advice would be not to change your preferred semester of admission. I was originally intending on a transfer last fall and then decided to wait for a spring transfer. When the application became available and I went to apply spring wasn’t an option. Due to the number of applications received they were not accepting any more…You’re better off getting in while you can or you may be forced to wait…

Saunders,
Thanks for weighing in. Please explain your situation more clearly. When you say “I was planning on a transfer but decided to wait,” what do you mean? Were you accepted for fall 2011 and then decided to try for spring? OR did put off applying and just plan on applying for spring and notice that you were out of luck? Please clarify.
I would be switching my application to summer 2012 RIGHT NOW, while it is definitely STILL listed as an option. And as for the high number of applications for fall, might that even help my case when I apply for spring? I know people are chomping at the bit to get accepted for fall, but probably not as many hoping for a spring admission.
You’ve certainly got me thinking. Could more people share some opinions on this? Thanks!

To clarify my situation…I was initially planning to apply for fall 2011. However, I decided to stay where I was and planned on applying for spring 2012. When the application became available last August, spring wasn’t even a choice. Summer and fall 2012 were the only options. At that point I decided on applying for a summer transfer because I wanted to know that I had a spot sooner rather than later. If I wasn’t going to be accepted I wanted to know so I could plan on transferring somewhere else.

I don’t know that I would try and change your application to summer instead of fall at this point. I believe the summer semester begins May 14. You said they won’t have all your materials until mid-May which could be after the summer semester begins and certainly would not give them ample time to make a decision. Also, who knows how filled up they are at the moment. It may be in your interest to call the admin office and get a feel for what they have to say.

One more thing, I think a lot depends on how many credits you have to transfer, your GPA, etc…If you’ve got a solid foundation it shouldn’t matter what semester you choose to transfer.

Good luck in any decision you make.

Why do you want to wait til spring?

Just would be a more ideal time for me to start up there for a several reasons. So romanigypsyeyes do you think switching my app to spring would be a more difficult scenario? Or should I view it the same way as fall, (just apply and if qualifications are met they will accept?) Keep in mind that my grades would most certainly get me in for fall (3.88 after first semester, probably roughly 3.8 after a full year with almost all integrative studies completed when they get my grades (which will be 30 credits, 27 transferable. Obviously before spring I would continue to earn credits this summer, as well as fall, and would probably head up to east lansing with between 44-50credits or so (essentially making me an ordinary second semester sophomore at state).
Will space be an issue for spring? Is this a bad idea where I will absolutely need to leave it for fall? Or could I go ahead and apply for 2nd semester, I really know nothing about applying for 2nd semester. Please advise…

I really don’t know. I don’t deal with transfer admissions. For a variety of reasons, I’d do fall. Easier for housing, easier to schedule classes, etc.

Yeah I’d ask MSU admissions directly about whether you can switch your application from fall 2012 to spring 2013 . Romani is right though, Fall admissions is way easier in terms of logistics. And as Saunders said, I did hear that MSU didn’t admit any spring 2012 transfers because they were overenrolled so I would be a little concerned that this might be the case for spring 2013 as well (even though you will likely get an admit to MSU well before fall or spring 2013 anyways).

Your acceptance is valid for one year. You can simply defer admission for one semester and enter Spring 2013. See the following page for reference.
