so has anyone heard back from msu if they have been accepted into honors college? or if they have been rewarded with any scholarships? im just wandering this because i got my admission letter about 2-3 weeks ago but no scholarship/honors college letters yet.

bump 10 char help

I think now is about the time they send them out. I went to an Honors College “taste” program a year ago this weekend and they had sent out the letters later that week, so I’d imagine the admissions letters will be coming soon. Not sure about scholarship timelines, since I think they vary–I got one in December and one in May, if I remember correctly.

ah i see thanks. did u get a lot of money from state? i heard state doesnt give out much money to kids

$6,000 for this year in scholarships, I think. Some last two years, if I remember correctly. (For the record, my stats: 4.0 GPA (valedictorian), 32 ACT, several ECs, Eagle Scout (though not until after I’d applied–got it in June.))

Update (sorry for the double-post if that’s a rule on these forums):

Talked to a friend who’s MSU '15 and he got his acceptance letter in the mail today along with notification of a scholarship and a professorial assistantship (33 ACT needed; might be automatically given to all who are, but I don’t remember). Hopefully yours comes soon!

aw dam i have a 32 act and a 3.75 uw hopefully i get something

Are you in the top 5% of your class?

I got my letter of acceptance from the MSU honors college on friday.

@ psi im not sure our school doesnt have rankings but id have to say somewhere in 3–8% not exactly sure

and @ rohinarak when did u send ur app? and when did u get ur admission letter?

is it absolutely necessary for me to be in the top 5% of my class regardless of my act score to recieve a honors college invite?

They do allow exceptions. For example, I had a 29 ACT but was valedictorian of my class and was accepted to the honors college. I think cases in which an applicant is close to the requirements is reviewed on a case by case basis for admission, so I can’t really tell you if it’s absolutely necessary for YOU to be in the top 5% of your class.

The requirements for MSU honors college have gotten stricter - before (fall 2008) when I applied you had to be top 10% ranking to get in, now it is top 5%.

Don’t fret - if you don’t hear back from HC about getting in, this is what the website tells you to do (this is new for fall 2011 applicants):

<a href=“Admissions Overview - MSU Honors College”>http://honorscollege.msu.edu/admissions/index.html

If you have not heard from the Honors College within four to six weeks of your MSU acceptance and you:

1) are close to the numeric criteria and

2) have exhibited a commitment to intellectual curiosity and academic rigor,

you may submit an additional essay to receive further consideration.

The essay should address a way in which you have demonstrated thinking “outside the box.” Essays should be headed with name and MSU Personal Identification (PID) number. Please also include a copy of your most recent high school transcript with all grades earned in the senior year. All materials should be sent via US mail to Dr. Bess German, Director, Admissions & Student Affairs, Honors College, Michigan State University, 105 Eustace-Cole Hall, East Lansing, MI 48824. Decisions will be sent via US mail within 6 weeks of receipt of materials on a rolling basis until May 1, 2011.

Students who are close to the Honors College invitation criteria also may be invited directly to the Academic Scholars Program www.msu.edu/~asp which offers enhanced academic opportunities during the first two years. Academic Scholars may be invited to join the Honors College after their first semester at MSU; the following section describes the admission process for current MSU students.

thanks guys! thats very helpful. btw did u guys get any scholarships?

Yep I did. (I had a 3.8 UW gpa/4.0 W, 33 ACT, top 5% of class). I am also an out-of-stater, so the scholarships are a little bit different than if you are in-state. I got a professorial assistantship, the tuition grant (lowering my tuition to in-state rates), and then a random “MSU collegiate scholarship” for 2K/year. In terms of hearing back, I got the professorial assistantship/tuition grant with my HC acceptance. I got the collegiate scholarship in July after I already was planning on attending. So in terms of when they decide to hand out scholarships, it seems to be pretty erratic so just wait and see.

ah i see thanks and apparently some of my friends said they already got letter of acceptance from honors college. so i guess im not in top 5% =( i wish they would rank by act wise then id be top 5% fo sho =P

Feel your pain there. 3.8+ gpa and 33 act here and I am not in the HC and received very few academic scholarships from them.

I got a really good FA package though so that could be why there was so little merit aid. Meh.

i guess it could be why but yea all those kids in top 5% take like easy classes i wish they did it weighted % wise then id be in top 5% but theres no reason to fret bout this ill just go wit the flow lol

The top 5% of my class almost all went to Ivy schools. Plus, everyone with a 4.0+ GPA was automatically ranked 1/xxx. As soon as you lost the 4.0, you dropped down to about the top 8%.

aw man that sucks =(
