<p>I actually agree with bearcats in terms of the j-school question. I feel that while MSU does have a decent “regional” journalism program, that one might be better served in today’s environment by a broad liberal arts/comm degree at Michigan (due to rigor) followed by a masters degree in journalism from one of the bigs (Columbia, NU, Syracuse, etc.)</p>
<p>To give that comment context, I used to be involved in the news biz, back in the stone age before real news went out of fashion I left when I saw the writing on the wall, but the last new hire before I went was a Columbia grad…and I will admit there’s truth in bearcat’s blunt assessment of resume reviews and school rep.</p>
<p>Even today as an employer it seems that if I want a candidate who knows how to craft a sentence or catch errors I will consciously or unconsciously only talk to folks from certain programs. I’ve seen what gets turned out other places and it’s quite sad.</p>
