I know, not really a tough call, but OOS killed me for a bunch of schools so I have to resort to my safeties till I can transfer out.

I got invited to MSU's honors college yesterday, with a 32,000$ scholarship(8k annual). So it made me think twice about U of Utah ( my first safety choice, cheaper+ more family there).

So right now, this is the break down:

MSU:

--> Honors college, scholarship, much better college community as a whole, more prestigous.

--> Too cold, COMMUNITY BATHROOMS(this is something major to me, lol).

Utah:

--> Nothing really, just cheaper(not a main concern), and more family here, bathrooms IN apartments.

--> Relatively dead community, not as prestigous as MSU.

Thanks for any responses, please help! (especially regarding MSU, I don't know much about residence there, or in general).

All I can say is that MSU Honors is very good. You get preferred enrollment in classes, meaning you are pretty much able to get into the classes you want. You get out of prerequisites, so you can take junior courses as a frosh, or even grad courses. A lot of people turn down UM for MSU honors here in state.

MSU actually doesn’t have only community bathrooms, only in half of its dorm buildlings, the older ones. The new ones have “suite style” bathroom, where two rooms are connected by one bathroom in between; so it’s the same as a private bath. Trust me, that was an issue for me too. I was mucho relieved to find that there are private bathrooms at MSU dorms.

The cold isn’t that bad. it’s only for 4 months after all.

Don’t forget MSU has one of the most beautiful campus in the nation, along with very nice food.

Beejay, I’d say that given the much higher prestige over Utah and general isolation of the state, I’d choose Michigan State in a heartbeat. You can’t estimate how MSU will propel you over Utah in terms of resources, diverse/strong student body and strong international alumni-connections over Utah. Even though you may have family ties near Utah, MSU is a very friendly and active environment, esp for a large school, with tons of support networks.

… and icypineapple is correct, the more modern dorms have suite-style bathrooms (1 bathroom for 2 rooms of 2 people). Also, there’s at least 1 dorm (Akers, maybe more) that is a dorm, overall (in, cafeteria, floor organizations, student mentors (the equivalent of RAs in other schools), except all the rooms are apartment-like; meaning there’s a private bathroom you only have to share with the 1 or 2 other person/people you share in your suite, just like in a private apt complex. And btw, after freshman year, there are U-owned apts on the edges of campus, too.

MSU is a better academic institution than Utah. And it is more conveniently located. However, $40,000 savings over 4 years should be considered. If you can handle it, fine, but if it will put you in a tough financial situation, you may want to go for Utah.

Otherwise, I would rcommend MSU…unless you love to ski, in which case, Utah would be heaven! hehe!
