MSU over Michigan?

I posted this on the ‘most complete’ university thread earlier, but I might as well share it here :

btw, to the users who are fretting over vengasso’s comments

…

I would take anything he says with a grain of salt.

in that usnwr ranking i have no idea how UC Berkeley got a student to faculty score of 38 while UofM got a score of 92. I don’t understand such a massive difference since the schools have roughly the same enrollment at the undergrad level and similar student to faculty ratio.

mjmay, that’s the problem with rankings. In reality, very little separates top universities. There is literally no real difference in resources and class size among top universities. Rankings take infinitesimal differences and blow them way out of proportion in order to “create” a ranking. In fact, they are pulling ***** out of their @sses! There is obviously no real difference in student to faculty resources between Cal and Michigan.

I think http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12733300-post84.html</a> addressed this issue nicely and explained the self-defense mechanism of Michigan-rejects quite well. So I’ll be lazy and just qft rather than post something myself and repeat what andre said.

Where did you see these scores?

I thought USNEWS have never posted these sub-section scores publically.

Survey: State’s college sports fans split between Wolverines, Spartans

Published: Monday, February 07, 2011, 4:00 PM

By Greg Johnson | The Grand Rapids Press MLive.com

A recent poll of the state’s college sports fans revealed that the fan bases of Michigan and Michigan State are almost identical in size.

Michigan won by a percentage point, 34-33, with a margin of error reported as +/- 4 percent.

The poll, commissioned and conducted via Lansing-based companies, said 34 percent of the college sports fans in the state identified themselves as fans of the Wolverines, and 33 percent call themselves Spartans fans.

Of the 600 college sports fans and Michigan residents polled between Jan. 24-27 by Marketing Resource Group, 21 percent said they were fans of neither team and 9 percent said both schools.

“When it comes to major college sports, Michigan is a state divided,” said Matt Resch, president of Resch Strategies, a public relations and communications company that commissioned the survey and announced the results.

“But that’s what makes rivalries great.”

Of those polled, 81 percent said they have never been enrolled at either school, and among the non-alums group 35 percent said they were Michigan fans and 33 percent Michigan State fans.

Regarding the rivalry, I find it quite amusing in children. I work for a sports photography company and one of the cities that we work in is Brighton and that seems to be a city divided right down the middle, green and blue. The kids in that league get to pick their names for their teams and they ALWAYS argue over whether they’re going to be Spartans or Wolverines. Most of the coaches are smart enough to make them pick something neutral, but you always have that one die hard fan coach who makes his team the Spartans or the Wolverines and the other half of the team is p!ssed. It’s just always fun to watch the 5 year olds fighting about college when they’re barely in Kindergarten.

Wow, accidentally ran into this thread posted here on CC more than five years ago…, many seem to have recognized MSU as a great academic school even then, which of course does not surprise me a bit. ;p

Go State!! :)

"A recent poll of the state’s college sports fans revealed that the fan bases of Michigan and Michigan State are almost identical in size.

…and yet many people from Ohio just assume that most everyone in the state of Michigan is as completely obsessed with The University of Michigan as they are with the Buckeyes in their state. Even when they see a sign on a highway in suburban Detroit such as, “Liar, Liar, Vest on Fire,” fans of tOSU just assume it was posted by a Michigan fan. In actuality it was bought and paid for by a disgruntled MSU fan who was rightly upset that his team didn’t get into a BCS game because the coach of Ohio State decided it was better to cheat than do the right and honorable thing.

Okay this is getting a little ridiculous. MSU is a fine regional university. It’s not a “prestige” school in the sense that nobody in New York or San Francisco is gonna go “OMG you went to MSU.” They’re at least going to recognize that Michigan is a top notch school.

^^ I agree!! However, Michigan State is certainly not regional, schools Wayne State, Oakland, Ferris State, Grand Valley State…, etc. are. “Michigan” State bears the name of the State of Michigan, wherever you go in the continental USA, people will certainly recognize!! Plus, it is a part of Big Ten Conference and CIC in terms of Academics. It also has a huge international student presence, though certainly not as selective or prestigious as U of M. MSU is known as the Pioneer Land Grant College founded by Abraham Lincoln.

Programs such as the Nuclear Physics, Elementary & Secondary Education, Media & Information, Industrial & Organizational Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Packaging, Food Science, Hospitality, Hotel Management, Supply Chain Management, Music Therapy, Primary Care & Studying Abroad Programs, …etc. are all second to none in the nation!!

Go Green!! lol

Cool. So now I’m going to naively assume that we can put this argument to rest.
