Hi all, I am very confused and I am hoping someone can answer some questions for me.
I was accepted into MSU in October and invited to Honors College in November. Just recently I received an invitation for the ADS Competition. However, I am confused about receiving merit-based scholarships and other types of scholarships.
I went back and looked at my Honors College invitation and the only scholarship thing they mention is the ADS Competiton. My offical acceptance letter did not mention scholarships at all.
So, is my only chance at earning money at all through State beating out ~1300 of the school’s top applicants?
Here are some things about me:
UW GPA: 3.98
W GPA: 4.3
SAT: 1490
10 AP Classes total, enrolled in 4 right now. I received 5’s on all exams taken so far besides 2 of them (4’s).
Rank: #2 out of 365
I am in marching band as brass captain and lead trumpet, and I am in NHS as well.
I live in Michigan.
Please help me, I would like to be able to relax for the holidays. Thank you!
My daughter was offered the State scholarship of $5,000 (8 semesters) and also a $3200 professorial assistantship (for two years). She also plans to go to the scholarship competition next month. Her stats are similar to yours, She received that information in her letter inviting her to the Honor’s College back in October.
@3js3ks , thank you for sharing your daughter’s information regarding scholarships but this does not help me at all. I said that there was no information about any scholarships besides the competiton in my Honors College invitation.
@solveforxyz18 Ok, if you want more information, you can certainly look at MSU’s website and read what is posted there. You missed the cut off for the State scholarship by 10 points on your SAT (according to my daughter you needed 1500 or higher to get that one). Some of the criteria is based on whether you are in state or OOS, also when you applied. Did you even read the website?
When did you hear about the invite to apply to honors college. I applied ion Nov 1st and was admitted around Nov 10th. Haven’t received any information other than the offer letter. No invitation to honors college or ADS competition. My stats are SAT 1560 GPA 3.70. Apparently ADS competition is only based on invitation. Getting desperate
@3js3ks I have. I already knew the cut off was 1500, I’m surprised you didn’t considering how often I’ve seen you around here. I have read through all of the material on their website, hence why I created an account and posted here to gain additional insight. After all, it is much easier to look at MSU’s website than create an account, make a post, and wait days for responses . As I mentioned being accepted in October, I am an early action applicant, so I think it is safe to say I did my research. I hope you have a good day, and if you have any more information for me (or if your daughter does, as she seems to be more knowledgable on the topic than you), please let me know.
My daughter’s stats are also same as yours. My daughter did not get any merit scholarship. But, invited to ADS. So, called MSu and they mentioned that they are reviewing the applicants and will receive merit scholarship between Dec and Apr. I am not sure why some have got and some are waiting. She applied in Oct and received acceptance in Oct. So, why there is a delay in receiving merit scholarships?
We took my son up for ADS this past weekend. What we heard there is that the students who go up and sit for the test are considered first priority for merit aid, as they have shown commitment by coming for it. Charles Cotton, the admissions rep for the Honors College told us before we went that going up for ADS greatly increased my son’s chances of getting other individual scholarships outside of the few that go to the students who get the top scores on the ADS test.
In contrast to @itsgettingreal17 's experience/view, my daughter and I traveled from out of state to attend ADS. She did not receive any ADS test related money. However, she did receive additional scholarship money from the Honors College as well as her university college. If MSU is of interest to your student and additional scholarship dollars would make it within budget - then contact the school.
Because your kid got money doesn’t mean going to ADS weekend increases chances of additional money. It doesn’t. The Honors College will tell you so. I know of a couple who received more but the vast majority didn’t. ADS weekend is not a small affair. There are probably 1k students between both weekends. Most aren’t getting additional money.
Nonetheless, ADS weekend is great and I highly recommend attending!
I found it rather difficult because of the art history included within the exam. It seems test scores will definitely reflect the variety of courses your school does (or doesn’t) offer. For example, I am sure students who came from schools that offered AP Art History were at an advantage.
