Can anyone tell me if I have a shot at getting scholarship money to Michigan State (if so, around what amount)? I will be a senior this fall and will be applying from CA. thanks!

SAT: W:670 CR: 660 M: 610 *will retake SAT and take ACT in fall

GPA: 3.97/4.0 UW, 4.17 W

Rank: 4/331

AP: will have completed 9 honors or AP classes by end of my senior year
-AP Euro: 3 AP Lang. and Comp: 4 AP US Hist.: 5

I am president of the CA Scholarship Federation, and was a founding member of 3 clubs at our school

I have captained the varsity soccer and tennis teams, and was all-league in those sports as well. I was also a league champion in track and field.

I have over 250 hours of community service

you won't get any scholarship money from MSU. Michigan's public schools really don't give away any merit based money. The only merit based money is the MEE, michigan merit exam, for michigan residents only. These schools don't give out very much. The top 35 candidates get free tuition (you won't be one of them). Your scores are too low for anything else. You need 2250 to get anything academically. The only one you may qualify for is the 65 semifinalist one. That's only $1500 a year. Don't go to MSU

I may sound contradictory, but the michigan govt. does not sponsor many merit scholarships. The 35 full tuition ones are given out by alumnus groups.
IN SUM: BEST CASE SCENARIO IS $1500 A YEAR.

oh, ok, thanks!

MSU has a competition every year called the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship (ADS) where kids with high grades and scores can compete to win anything from full rides to lesser scholarships. My son had a 4.0 GPA and a 28 ACT and was invited to it. My son received more than $1500 dollars and from what I could tell there seems to be more than 60 scholarships from MSU. We are from Michigan so maybe you would be offered more coming from out of state.
The MEAP and Michigan Promise Awards are merit awards given just to Michigan kids who pass tests in middle school and high school. That has nothing to do with MSU scholarships.

so when I apply to MSU will they automatically consider me for scholarships, or do I have to apply for them seprately?

I was thinking of Michigan State as a possibility for my Son.
We are from out of state
What about these scholarships that are posted on their web site.

Alumni Distinguished Scholarship-

Distinguished Freshman Scholarship-

University Scholars Award

Honors College Tuition Grant- (Act of 33 and above gets in state
tuition)

These do not appear to be for only Michigan Residents.
Are these difficult to get?
If you have above an ACT of 33, do you automatically get the
in state grant?

Yes. 10char. Don't go to MSU. I am from michigan, and know that it may look like a good university, but it truly is nothing more than a party school. If you are not in the honors dorm, good luck getting much done. I don't know why the OP is considering MSU. The cal schools are much better and much less expensive.

yeah, i know, but i want to go out-of-state. msu was just going to be a safety school for me. other than that, i wasn't seriously considering it.

Well vc08, don't be completely put off of MSU by 1MX. My brother attends MSU and from what I've seen it's reputation is entirely exaggerated in light of the strengths and resources of the university. Now of course MSU is big, and it suffers from all the problems that plague large universities but the sheer amount of classes and research is amazing. It has many top programs including plant biology (which is the first to come to mind since I'm a bio person). So I think that if you are the type of person who wants to learn but also have some fun consider MSU.

I'm live in Michigan, and from what I've heard it has a fairly good vet school (graduate, but there's probably a good pre-vet type program too), but I'm not sure if that's in terms of the whole country or just the mid-west. It was started as a land-grant college, so there's probably fairly good agricultural type programs there too.

Like any school, MSU has it's strengths and weaknesses. Sure, it isn't Harvard, but that doesn't mean that nobody would fit in or do well there.

thanks, it's always good to get input from all different sides. Honestly, MSU is not one of my top choices. My first is notre dame, followed by u-michigan. but both of those are slight reaches, and i wanted a big research school, so msu seemed like a logical safety. i'm a firm believer that college will be whatever i make of it, be it notre dame or msu. that being said, i don't care too much what name it carries so long as it has a good reputation and will allow me to have a great experience. thanks again for the help guys, i appreciate it.

Went to orientation at MSU and they said they are no longer a "party school".
People from all over the U.S. go to MSU because it is a fantastic place. A friend of mine took engineering there 30 years ago and now owns her own engineering company in West Palm Beach Florida. MSU education students are sought after by other states.
You have to get your application into MSU by November 1 to be considered for scholarships. I am a parent so I don't know about grants.

Djsebran, yes, out of state people try for the scholarships and a lot of them have higher ACTs than 33.

my cousin graduated from msu's education program and loved it there. he ended up marrying a umich alum though so they might have to work on that rivalry lol.

1MX is entitled to his/her opinion, but sounds like he/she has ye old ax to grind. MSU is a very good school with lots of scholarship opportunities, even beyond ADS line of merit scholarships -- check out the University Scholars program for out of state students from designated states, east and west, (Cali is one of them), where the pressure isn't so great to score well on the ADS exam in the winter... and Shyanne is right, MEAP is across the (Michigan) board and isn't tied specifically to MSU... It is true, that as a public U., Most people in this thread, esp shyanne, are giving good advice. Again, check the Office of Admissions & Scholarships link on the msu.edu website, to find out more scholarship specifics. And don't hesitate to pick up the phone and call.
