How do they compare to most school? How about UMich? I don't expect them to as great(UMich is a super-top-ultra research uni) but I should hope that they're at least somewhat comparable(UMich's undergrad isn't supposed to be that great).

I've attended both schools for undergrad and can say at UM or MSU (both large research universities), your academic experience is what you make of it. Assuming you seek out professors/ seek honors opportinities/ do research etc you're going to get a great academic experience at MSU.

Contrary to your perception, UM's undergraduate program is top notch if you seek out your own opportunities. While graduate students are given a greater focus, undergrads hardly ever hit a wall when it comes to academic opportunities.

Some of the most noticeable differences may be that not as many students do these types of things at MSU (even though the opportunity does exist) and faculty members may not be quite as famous (at the undergraduate level this may not be a problem, except UM offers slightly better reserch options due to this).

If there's anything else that you're wondering I'll try and help.

Does anyone have any information about the Hospitality Program at MSU? Is it hard for students from out of state to get in? If you are not accepted into the honors program from the start, is it possible to get in later on? (My daughter has a HS average of 101, 4/490 class rank, but can't seem to do very well on standardized tests.) Does majoring in hospitality make the school feel "smaller", because you are in a major with not as many students. MSU seems like it has a lot to offer! Any help would be appreciated!

"Does anyone have any information about the Hospitality Program at MSU?"

From everything I've heard it's a pretty good program considering that there aren't that many across the country. One running joke is that the people who can't get into Broad after their soph year go into it so the admissions standards aren't too difficult for students (at least in relation to the B-school).

"If you are not accepted into the honors program from the start, is it possible to get in later on?"

Yes, most students get into the Honors college after their 1st year. Everyone with a GPA in excess of 3.5 is invited and encouraged to apply.

Do students start in the Hospitality Program as freshmen? If not, how/where would someone apply (to which school)? Thanks!

No, no one starts in that as a freshman; there are a number of required university classes that are taken in the first year (and some in the second year) like writing, science, etc. In the soph. year I believe that an application can be requested from an advisor within the hospitality or business school or something like that once a student "declares" their major.

MJB4431, MSU's Hospitality Business program is more than just pretty good, it generally considered one of the top 2 (along with Cornell's) in the country.

xxJustAMomxx, as for the Honor's College, a student does have a 2nd chance to make it if not invited as a freshman: at the end of freshman year, a student with an outstanding 1st-year record can apply, but slots for such students are very limited.

As for whether MSU's program is 4-years, I believe it is, but check the below link and the Cavs website. I do know it's the only major program within a business school.
http://www.bus.msu.edu/shb/

I definately understated that and understated the HB program's quality, however I do know that its standards are easier for admission than Broad and is often a fall-back if students can't get into the b-school.

That being said it is one of the best.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I guess my daughter would apply to the business school and declare hospitality business as her major? Is it hard for out of state students to be accepted to the business school? I lookied at the web site and first it said that you can apply to the hospitality program once you have 53 (?) or so credits, but it also said that freshmen can also declare hospitality as their major, so we're just a little confused. I guess the best way to figure it out is to visit the school. Thanks again for all your help! Have a great holiday!

does anyone know anything about MSU's Psyc Program for undergrads?

I am not a psychology major, however, I have friends who are majoring in psychology. I am currently taking another psychology class (I found out that I really enjoy psychology, so I might major in it).

If you want to know more about the psychology program (course requirements for the major, professor VITA's, etc.) , visit http://www.psychology.msu.edu

Also, I can give some recommendations on psychology professors to have. :)
