My daughter just got her first acceptance for an MSW program! She applied to the International Community Development track. I've noticed that this track seems newer than the clinical. Fordham has a new Global specialization and Catholic allows you to combine clincal and international.

Has anyone done the international development track? I've read that it doesn't matter what school you get your MSW from so the goal should be to keep the debt down. How about a program that is newly accredited rather than an established one for years?

My daughter applied to Fordham University, Univ of Md in Baltimore, Catholic University, Rutgers and Monmouth University.

International development, if she wants to work overseas, does not look too much at where the master’s came from so long as it’s vaguely related (MBA, MPA, MSW all good) and from an accredited university. I mean they’re not going to wonder if Rutgers was having a sham program going on. Obviously they are an institution that would take a school seriously if they took the time to set it up. So yes, just keep the costs down. Int. Dev. is sorely in need of higher degrees.

Make sure she looks at a concentration in a practical field: medical administration, medicine is not an option but public health might be, statistics is a great one, business / micro-finance / banking / economics, utilities, anything practical and hands-on will help her immensely in the job market.

Congratulations again and good luck!

Thanks for your reply! I’m just wondering if she’d have more options if she sticks with the clincal track. No idea if you’re able to switch tracks once you’ve applied to one.
