MSW/MPH --> Ph. D.

Hello, I'm about to commence work on dual masters programs in Social Work and Public Health at the University of Pennsylvania. I know thinking about Ph. D. programs may prove a bit premature, but I've been trying to decide what direction to go after completing my two masters degrees. My ultimate career goal is to become a professor at a university and write/perform research involving the aforementioned disciplines.

The University of California - San Francisco proffers a Ph. D. program in sociology that particularly piques my interest. (Prospective Students, Doctoral Program (Sociology) - UCSF School of Nursing - University of California, San Francisco - nurseweb.ucsf.edu) I definitely see myself applying to this program because it uniquely focuses on the sociology of health care, but my efforts to find analogous programs have proven fruitless. And it seems rather preposterous to wager all of my hopes on one graduate program.

I've been searching within multiple disciplines- humanities-based programs in sociology, public health programs, graduate programs within medical schools. Any advice? My decision is not imminent - my masters program is three years long. I just wanted to commission some objective opinions on my situation.

Look for PhD programs that offer medical sociology, public health, or medical social work.

Usually sociology and social work PhD programs offer specializations where you can focus specifically on health.

Thanks, tenisghs. Greatly appreciated.
