An undergrad (who is interested in an eventual MSW, leading to LCSW) must choose between the undergrad BSW or another more general undergrad degree, such as psychology. The MSW programs are split between those that require the BSW and those that do not. The student is leaning away from BSW at the bachelor’s level, out of concern the bachelor’s degree should be more broadly marketable. (There seems to be much more work out there for MSWs than BSWs, and it appears that many newbie-BSW jobs could be given to someone without the BSW.) Can anybody comment from experience on the pros and cons of BSW or not, for a person in this situation? Also, is there any stratification about it, where maybe the MSW programs that are higher on the academic totem pole are looking for the BSW? The accrediting body’s website doesn’t shed light on this, and short of looking at all the MSW programs out there, it’s hard to discern a trend or stratification – we’ve checked a few and so far we see just that there’s a split between MSW programs that require BSW and those that do not. Thanks.
