My son did commit to Texas State. The moment he did, he notified those schools that had called him back or sent emails letting him know that he was being seriously considered or had already accepted him (total of 4 programs) that he had committed to TX State and was withdrawing himself from contention for their programs with sincerest gratitude for their interest. That left 5 schools that he had auditioned for but had not gotten any indication of his status with them. It would have been very presumptuous for him to write to those schools taking himself out of play when he had no idea whether he was in any sort of final mix. He received a rejection from one so there was no need for further interaction. He has, today, received Pace’s alternate decision and immediately thanked and informed them of his decision elsewhere. There are still 3 programs yet to hear from and, until he does (rejected, accepted [unlikely at this point], or waitlist), he will hold off on any unnecessary communication with them.

I understand that this is a tense time for all but assumptive criticism isn’t productive.

As MomCares also mentioned, unless it is an acceptance through Early Decision which is binding and requires an applicant to withdraw all other pending applications, nobody is under any requirement to notify any of their schools about a decision until May 1. Yes, it is nice to let schools know if you are sure you are not going to attend. But a student is not required to do so (until May 1) and certainly can wait to hear his/her admissions outcome wherever he/she paid to apply/audition. Let’s try to respect one another’s choices, as long as everyone is following the established official rules (sounds like people are doing the latter).

@MTLegacy, When you audition for someone “you are putting yourself in contention” until either they reject you, or you tell them you are withdrawing your application. Just because you had “not gotten any indication of status” does not mean they werent considering you. If he submitted an app and completed an audition, he is “in play.” I do think it appropriate you inform all schools. Typically schools have no communication or “indications” of status other than your acceptance/rejection letter. So I still don’t get it.

@Soozievt then I stand corrected. I thought it was protocol and common courtesy that when a “formal acceptance” is tendered to a school, as MTLegacy has done with Texas State, one is then duty bound to withdraw all outstanding applications. Otherwise we would all be in a situation where an accepted offer would mean a maybe and schools would not have any idea who was truly accepting their offers as opposed to those who are hedging their bets. I don’t understand how such a scheme would work if all did this. Please explain.

I think the only thing you can’t do is put a deposit on more than one school. Although it would be the honorable thing to do so those on the wait list could come off, it is not a legal requirement. Many kids don’t hear anything about wait lists until after the May 1 deadline because kids don’t decline until then. If one has made a deposit and decision it would be kind to let those other schools know…

I don’t see this as a scheme at all, tramsmom. An applicant has until May 1 to let their accepted schools know if they will take the offer or not. They don’t have to do so before that. They certainly can wait to hear their admissions outcome (yes, the student is still “in play” if no decision has been rendered) and then if accepted, can turn it down. I don’t consider MTLegacy’s child’s decision to enroll at Texas State as a “maybe” I will enroll. I don’t see this as “hedging their bets.” But they still can wait to hear the admissions outcome from all their schools and see if they have to turn any down. As Jkellynh says, you can’t turn down something that has yet to be offered to you. But no matter, there is no rule that applicants must notify their accepted schools prior to May 1, the National Reply Date. At that time, schools can determine their yield and see if they need to go to the wait list. The ONLY students obligated to PULL their applications that are pending are those who were admitted under binding ED Decision.

You can withdraw an application at any time. No need to wait for something to be offered. That said, as MTLegacy describes his immediate refusal of any current offers it is hard to see any harm in his approach.

I cross posted with bissou in #486, but basically agree with her. You can’t double deposit according to official rules (and MTLegacy is not doing that, btw). But there is no obligation to withdraw pending apps under RD. Yes, once notified of an acceptance and you know you are not going to attend since you chose another school, it is the right thing to do to let those schools know as soon as you know, and certainly by May 1. MTLegacy is doing that. Getting his/her results of all applications is totally fine first!

@Soozievt we crossposted. I do see harm if everyone were to engage in this practice. What is the point of additional offers if one can no longer accept per the “rules”? But I usually think differently than others, so there’s that. I think the schools would like to know before putting together their class and agonizing over boy a or boy b, only to have boy b immediately say, oh, never mind.

Sorry, but I don’t agree. ALL THE TIME, schools may be agonizing over some applicant who in the end is unlikely to attend (for example, it is their safety school). But the process has to play itself out. That is why many schools accept more students than slots available, and also maintain a wait list. There are lots of applicants who have schools on their list that are back ups for one reason or another. They deserve to obtain their admission decision before being required to inform the school they are turning an acceptance down. There is no obligation to withdraw PENDING applications in RD. There is an obligation to withdraw those under the binding ED policies. Again, once decisions are rendered, and if a student is declining the offer, it is ethical to let the school known as promptly as you can, and in any case, by May 1.

I’m with @Transmom‌ on this one. Once you have accepted an offer, you withdraw all applications and /or acceptances from consideration. Yes, you do have until May 1st to make a decision. However, in this case, they made the final decision early and everything else should be off the table. Frankly, for schools who have not finalized their lists, considering a student who has committed elsewhere is a colossal waste of time.

By the way, I am going by college admissions rules/policies and not what someone may find as acceptable or not. What someone posted here about what they are doing with their acceptances follows the rules. If it doesn’t follow someone else’s idea of what is acceptable or not, I think we should not judge, at least not publicly. I’m just saying that I don’t observe any posts about activities that do not follow the official college admissions rules/guidelines.

I stand corrected then. MtLegacy is well within his “rights” to have schools consider him for admittance, but he is no longer able, per the rules, to accept any offers made. ~O)

^^^^That’s pretty much correct…except…I suppose conceivably, MTLegacy’s kid could withdraw the intent to enroll at Texas State and enroll elsewhere before May 1 (not double deposit!! which is not permitted). But that makes no sense and I feel certain they won’t be doing that because they were not obligated (and had no advantage) by accepting Texas State’s offer so soon because they had until May 1 to weigh offers and decide where to enroll and could have let Texas State know after all decisions had been received. But the student is enrolling at Texas State and chose to notify their intent to enroll because it was the dream school and they have already decided. There would be no reason to have otherwise sent in the intent to enroll at Texas State before hearing the full list of results. So, they are simply waiting to get results to know them and if an acceptance is rendered, they are turning it down promptly. I see nothing wrong with that and it does follow the rules.
