MT additional costs while in college- what should I expect?

Amazon prime will pay for itself in free 2 day shipping alone. We use it at least once a week

Oh yeah… Love my Amazon Prime, @toowonderful‌!

Many of the BFA schools my kids were accepted at had program fees over and above the tuition rates that we’re published on the schools’ websites. About $4000-5000 per year. That was a shock for me.

I wonder if that is true for others majors too- I was thinking of science and lab fees etc. or art and supplies…

@bromquest‌ If S spending stays at the same level as last semester, I would say that’s about right.

toowonderful…when my D was in grad school for architecture, the art supplies needed were plentiful on a regular basis…more than the typical allocation for books.

True, there are those costs, but I was actually talking about additional tuition charged by the particular colleges for the BFA theatre major. I found out once the offers came in and we started making comparisons. The colleges/ departments often tack on a “program fee” (at some schools it may be called something different, i.e. Conservatory fee, Professional fee, etc) or just be a higher tuition - like Tisch versus other NYU schools. It can be several thousands.

I think it’s next to impossible to anticipate all the fees that seem to be sometimes added to the total tuition at colleges. For example, one semester, my art major D took photography, voice lessons, stage makeup through Tisch and another art class or two. I got a heads up before she registered that stage makeup had a $695 additional fee for a make up kit. But additionally besides tuition and the standard registration and fees I pay to Steinhardt above the cost of tuition, there was a $105 private voice lesson fee, a $350 photography lab fee and a $350 art studio fee.

I think the bottom line is, you always need to anticipate an extra thousand or so in unanticipated costs that you will probably not know about until you see the bill.

Yes @kategrizz, since The D has been in school there have been 20 Amazon orders. The savings on shipping definitely paid for student prime ($49) and we may or may not have a problem!

uskoolfish - Ouch! Son took a makeup class last semester and his kit was under $100, though I did take him to Target to get makeup for the Drag Queen assignment  Amazon Prime has been a life saver. Son texted he needed another book for a class on Thursday and book arrived in time for the next class.

Another vote here for Amazon Prime!

My D has needed “costume pieces” for scene study several times- and often on short notice. Since shopping in NYC can get pricey (though she has started to find a couple thrift options around) amazon prime has been a lifesaver. Just yesterday she bought a nun’s wimple…
