Does anyone know how many Otterbein accepts to yield 8? Had a wonderful audition with them and am falling in love with the program!

I’d call and ask. If you do get numbers, please post them here!

I think I’m correct in saying that they only accept their 8 and have a waitlist for each one of the accepts (kind of like an understudy for the each of the 8 accepted). That’s what they did last year.

@GSOMTMom Do you know if anyone made it off the waitlist?

I don’t know about last year. I only knew one person who was on the waitlist last year. I don’t know if she made it off or not because she had so many options from which to choose. A Moo Kid

@Transmom‌ people get off the waitlist at Otterbein almost every year from what I understand. And I believe GSOMTMom is correct they accept exactly 8 MT (4 of which are typically MTs with dance concentration although in my Son’s class there is only 1 female MTD). Then they put 8 on the waitlist, to my knowledge they don’t go deeper than that but I don’t know that for sure. It seems if they don’t get their first two choices the class that year is smaller. For example this year there is only 6 acting majors vs the normal 8.

So perhaps then it would be correct to say, 8 admissions, 8 waitlist each year.

That would be correct.

MTMC - I thought there were 7 in the Otterbein Acting class this year, five girls and two guys. Of course since son never tells me anything, this was my assumption knowing there were 15 in the combined MT/Acting BFA class this year

That would not be inconsistent with what he is saying if they went two deep, that’s the end of the journey apparently. In other words, if the first and second choice for the open spot went elsewhere, Otterbein doesnt go deeper than that to fill their class. They just allow for an empty seat.

I still believe Otterbein is the toughest school to get into

It is in the 3% range I would think. Among the toughest odds.

I don’t have current numbers for Northwestern, but can add some general information that might be of interest to some.

Using the very best case numbers (which from what I’ve heard don’t apply to Theatre, which is a capped major with a higher-than-average number of applicants) the university overall had a 12.9% admit rate. Since NU admits ~100 Theatre majors, that would imply that at least 769 kids apply as Theatre majors. Also, since NU applicants are overwhelmingly in the upper 5% of their HS classes, one can assume that many (up to 90% of the) kids who might have an interest in the program don’t bother applying as they self-select out based on academics.

If the school admitted 30 of the 100 Theatre students to the MT Certificate (D’s year it was only 15 but I think it can go as high as 30), that would mean that of the original 769 academically-qualified applicants, ~3.9% would graduate as MTs.

For all of the reasons mentioned above, I suspect the actual MT admit rate may be significantly lower than 3.9%.

But also keep in mind that the 100 Theatre students are not all MT or even performers. Many are future Directors, Writers, Producers, Stage Managers and Designers.

Re: the Otterbein question, I heard last year (via students) that they actually didn’t waitlist as many as usual, at least for acting (this may have been true for 2013 also…?).

NWestern is an anomaly in that there is no audition. They admit kids based upon grades and test scores and to a lesser extent, resumes and ECs. So I don’t think they are comparable to the other auditioned programs. That said, I am thankful for their existance, as they take some MT interested applicants off the market, creating more room in other programs.

University of Michigan gave these numbers for 2015 (at audition last Friday)… roughly 850 applied, 350-400 passed pre-screen (she did not have exact numbers), they will take 11 boys and 11 girls (22 total).

So passing their prescreen puts your odds at about 5%. Prior to prescreen, about half that, 2.5% very very stiff odds there. But she didnt have exact numbers, and whe also did not say how many they would accept to yield 22. Probably only two or three is my guess. Does anyone know? Or do they just accept 22, and if they dont get them, they just have a smaller class?

@Transmom Michigan makes an offer to the 22. They do go to the waitlist if all do not accept. My son’s year all accepted. Michigan also has academic requirements that must met before you can audition.
