The UMich numbers sound right to me. I think when schools report application numbers over 1000 they are usually inflating their numbers, often by counting all the kids who attend mass regional and national auditions. Many of those kids have little or no interest in the school and never actually apply, and many would be double counted as they attend multiple audition events. In many cases not all of those kids are even college seniors, let alone planning to pursue an MT degree (eg the Thespian Festivals).
For last year of 2014 auditions. We were told Emerson had about 1000 applicants for MT they accepted 10! Boys and 9 girls. This is for class of 2018
Please keep in mind that the number of people in a freshman class is rarely the total number accepted. More are typically accepted than spots in the class. Emerson’s yield was ten. They surely accepted more than 10 and some chose to attend elsewhere. I know of very few MT programs that accept only the number of spots in the class (and otherwise use a wait list)…CMU and Otterbein come to mind. Emerson does not. I know plenty of people accepted to Emerson who chose to attend another program.
My S was accepted into Emerson last year (BFA MT) and elected not to attend (so that is at least one male).
According to Syracuse admissions office, the numbers for Fall 2015 are as follows: 657-700 MT applicants. They will accept around 40 to yield a class of 23. No specific breakdown of male/female.
Penn State 2015 numbers , 596 applicants, 446 prescreen passes, class of 14 students anticipated, accept only a few more so I’ll say 17 and utilizes what I like to call an understudy waitlist.
I’ll admit to being a bit surprised by those Penn State numbers. Not by the class size, of course, but by the number of total applicants and percentage of prescreen passes. I would have thought the applicant pool would be bigger and the prescreen pass rate lower. Maybe that means only the most talented applied?
I think they only weed out the prescreens for those that absolutely are not right (think American Idol auditions perhaps). I’ve heard they pass about 80%. Based on this year’s numbers they passed 75% which seems to be in line with previous years.

As reported by Cary Libkin himself.
@GSOMTMom I will edit footnote to reflect that on next update! Thanks!

Re: Otterbein (have a freshman daughter in the MT Program). They typically try to take 8 MT (4 women, 4 men) and 8 Theatre (4 women, 4 men); but that can change slightly from year to year. Dr. John did say during the 2014 auditions that they will waitlist 1 or 2 deep (at most) behind each type. Great program…our daughter loves it.
^Yes, in 2014 there were five women and two men in the BFA Acting class.
Does anyone know how many typically audition for the University of Utah?
My son is on the wait-list for Penn State MT and very excited that he still has a chance. Does anyone know how many are typically on the wait-list and have any knowledge of how often they have gone to it in the past?
This is what Western Michigan said last week …
On 3/6 they said that they had already seen roughly 200.
There were about 100 (give or take) in the theater that day. 200 + 100 = 300 total auditions
They plan to take 15 for the 2019 class.

Anyone know about University of the Arts? Number accepted, number of applicants?
^^^I would also like to know this! I know the current freshman MT class is around 23 but not what their yield is or how many audition.
