MT Certificate Auditions

Welcome to CC!!

It sounds like our girls have a lot in common, and I’m so glad there is a school that offers the balance between strong theatre training and very selective academics that Northwestern does for kids like ours.

I hope your D settles in quickly (ours was quite sick her whole first month) and that she enjoys NU as much as ours has so far. Don’t know if you have other kids in college, but wise parents in Evanston told me it would take ~10 weeks to get used to having her gone, and they were just about right.

As I recall, D did need to adjust her schedule once she found out about voice classes, but it worked out just fine.

Good luck to her if she’s in the midst of a cappella auditions this week!

Keep us posted about her experiences NU and especially the changes to the MT program, since she’ll be experiencing them firsthand!

I left my D highly excited and happy as well! She’s thrilled with her floor, her dorm, her PA group, her school, her courses, everyone she meets–Everything so far!–As I’ve mentioned before, she’s not interested in the MT cert, but I wanted folks to be aware NU offers other minors and certs. Two particularly sound awesome: The film minor and the writing cert. The writing cert is for screenwriting/playwrights and really sounds wonderful, although you have to apply in your Sophomore year. Check out both to give an idea of all the things NU has to offer.

Thank you MomCares. I spoke with D for first time yesterday (her Aunt sent care package that included “Call Your Mom” pillow… And she did! LOL). I shared with her about a capella movie coming out. She hadn’t heard about it yet at school, but would ask around to see who might be going. I don’t know if she is trying out for a capella. She did say she was offered a chance to help stage manage a Fall show. She was thrilled at being able to expand her interests.

Thank you by the way for your post on the Broadway or Bust thread. H and I appreciated it very much :).

Our D really needs on of those!! ;-D

I have no idea if it will be any good (and I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience ;-), but here are some details about an upcoming Northwestern screening…

Very cool… congratulations to her!! Our D is taking an MT Directing class this quarter, so we’re hoping she’ll discover a hidden passion/talent.

As usual, I couldn’t resist.

Connections – I am SO glad your D is also happily getting settled in to NU!! The two Certificate programs you mentioned sound fantastic - I’ll read up on them to learn more!

MomCares - my friend in NC has a quaint shop called Kate McCall. They custom make really nice “Call Your Mom” pillows. In fact, you can order “Call Your Aunt”, etc. in both boy and girl motif. Here is a link to a photo on their FB page [Kate McCall’s Photos | Facebook](Redirecting...)

If the link doesn’t work, you can google Kate McCall in Lincolnton, NC

Also, thanks for the info on Perfect Pitch. I’ve passed it onto D. It is great that it will be shown on campus.

How exciting for your D to be taking a MT Directing Class. So many opportunities to explore different facets of theater in and outside of MT.

I was wondering if theater majors participate in (or even have time to participate in) Greek Life? Does anyone have any input on the Jones residential college?

Thank you.

D pledged to a sorority last year and really likes the girls in her house! She is constantly insanely busy, though, so I don’t think she is able to participate in all of their activities. Lots of NU theatre kids go Greek and seem to really enjoy it, though it is by no means required to have a great time on campus.

D lived in Jones RC last year (she has an apartment with friends this year), and though she wasn’t initially thrilled when she was assigned there (and had literally the smallest dorm room on campus) in the end she really enjoyed living there. She made lots of great friends there, and it is fantastic for Theatre majors as so many shows happen in the Jones dorm Theatre AND there are practice rooms in the dorm (which D used A LOT)!!

TeaTime,
My son is a junior theatre major and is in a fraternity. Although he doesn’t have time to participate in all the frat activities, he does enjoy the chance to get away from all the “drama” of the theatre majors, LOL. Last year, a whole group of his fraternity brothers came to see him in a show and found it so enjoyable that they said they are going to include it as a formal activity this year. :)

Thank you MomCares and Momof3sons!

Good to know Greek life is doable. It’s seems smart that NU postpones Rush until winter quarter.

Rehearsals rooms in Jones RC sounds great too.

Thanks again.

I hope everyone is hanging in there through these initial grueling weeks of auditions!

I know this is the life our kids crave, but I still imagine this first round of college auditions is a challenge even for those who stay healthy. D said the A Cappella auditions were VERY competitive this year, which speaks well for the overall talent level of the Class of 2016. Hope your kids are still having fun and are getting increasingly adjusted to the “roller-coaster of awesome” (someone else’s words) that is life at Northwestern!

TO MOMCARES
Thank you for your message MomCares. I could not respond as I dont have 15 posts yet so I am hoping you see this post. Our D is very excited about all things NU. *So far, even the cold isn’t dampening her experience :). *We are delighted she is getting involved in a sorority and trying out for an a cappella group right now in addition to the MT vocal class. *I believe you mentioned in a post that your D did the same along with directing. *There is certainly a lot to keep them BUSY and exploring at NU. It is very comforting to know our D is settled and thriving after her stressful senior year. Whew!!!

Again, thank you for your message. *It was very kind of you to reach out. *All the very best to you and your D too! *She sounds like an amazing young woman. *Isn’t it a thrill to see where life is taking our Ds…

Yes, these NU Theatre kids have no shortage of ways to keep busy! I’m amazed they manage to squeeze in enough time to study and am sure there can be no time left for sleeping.

So glad to hear your D is settling in so well and has survived this latest week of auditions! We have HS senior (not an MT) this year and it will be a relief if he ends up as happy where he lands as D is, so it’s always encouraging to hear of more happy freshmen.

Is it disloyal to hope D comes home instead of doing summer stock again this summer?

MomCares - it’s not being disloyal… It is being a mom
I just wonder how they fit summer stock, internships, and study abroad all in to their summers and leave some time for home too???

Having a senior this year with a different focus on course of study must be like starting all over again for you. I am sure that the days of receiving acceptance notifications can’t come soon enough. The best of everything to you and your S!

Just heard from our D. She was accepted into an A Cappella group… but also has the flu with a fever of 102. She was hoping to escape this bug that has gone viral (no pun) on campus. I guess NOT!

Oh dear! I hope she feels better very soon and has roommates/friends to pamper her bit… or at least to help her find the school clinic if she needs it. The flu is hitting Chicago hard this year. :frowning: For what it’s worth, D was quite sick her 1st quarter of freshman year and was well cared for by NU, but it’s hard on mom to be too far away to help, so you hang in there as well.

D opens a show this weekend and apparently lots of folks in the cast have been ill this week. Ah well, soon it will be spring and this bug will pass.

Congratulations on her a cappella group! It involves a lot of time but seems like a great way to form a core group of friends – and it must be SO much fun to make amazing music together.

The quarter system can make the timing for summer shows tricky, and I know last summer’s schedule didn’t leave much room for family time. Hoping for more this year.

Sending healing thoughts toward Evanston!!

Sending healing thoughts toward Evanston!!

Yes, push those healing thoughts to Evanston! My son is also sick and I finally insisted he go to the health center today. Hard to take classes as an actor which are supposed to be focused on training his voice when he has no voice…and show rehearsals, of course.

@momof3sons - So sorry to hear your S is sick as well, but glad he’s headed to the clinic. It’s always good to rule out sinus infections and other treatable problems. D has got the crud now, too, and called today after a voice lesson in which she also had very little voice. Ah, the life of actors!
