I know Oklahoma City Univ. has a combined MT-Classical program - there is one audition and then an accepted student can take classes in both. Does anyone know of another?

My daughter is a freshman at NYU Steinhardt this year. There, the MT degree is actually Vocal Performance with concentration in Music Theatre. Half of the group of 26 have a classical concentration and the other half MT. However, many of their classes are taken together: piano, choir, diction, aural composition, theory, etc. and all are required to take private vocal lessons that begin with solid classical training before heading into musical theatre. They are also required to audition for both musicals and opera. This program is very different from the Tisch program at NYU.

James Madison University offers a BM with an emphasis in Music Theatre through the School of Music as well as the BA in Musical Theatre through the School of Theatre and Dance. The program audition separately, but students in the programs are integrated in classes and performances.

Plymouth State University allows students to audition for both the Musical Theatre and the Vocal Performance and Pedagogy programs, if admitted to both a student may double major.

Here are some programs that have similarities to OCU’s program:

Florida State joint program between Theatre and Music Departments
Belmont
Arizona State
Miami (Fla)
North Carolina Pembroke
Rider/Westminster
Wichita State

You may want to look down the list in Post #2 of the “Big List” thread for schools that offer BM MT degrees:

Very helpful - thank you

California State University, Northridge has a wonderful BA Music program in Vocal Performance with an emphasis on classical repertoire. Additionally, the Music and Theatre schools have just partnered to offer a minor in MT. You can Major in Theater OR Vocal Performance and minor in MT.

At NYU Steinhardt, you get a BM in Vocal Performance with either a classical voice or MT concentration, and the MT concentration is no different than a lot of BFA MT degrees, just with a lot more music curriculum, and the focus is on classical technique. Also, the classical and MT students have the exact same classes for the first two years.

sounds like NYU Steinhart has everything you wanted. hope freshman year is going well.

Shenandoah offers a performance certificate in classical voice for interested students.
