MT College kids goin to SUMMERSTOCK..where???

Hey guys...just wondering where everyone is ending up over the summer for work. Just in case any of us may be ending up in the same place so we can get in touch.

TheatreJock- Prather Family's Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre (Mesa,AZ)

Congrat's TheatreJock - hope you have a wonderful summer!

I'm afraid that many people will be reluctant to post where their college student will be in the summer, but many have been successful so far.

I'm not asking for a parent to post for their child..I'm just asking for college students who are on CC to share where they will end up just like HS students share their final decisions for college.

Daughter said it was ok to post, so I'll add her to the bottom:

They're doing Miss Saigon at this playhouse this summer, right??? I'm going to see it!!

My d couldn't go to any of her callbacks at Strawhat because she had her show that night. So I guess THAT was a waste of time!! Oh well.
Congrats to Showmom's daughter and Theaterjock! What part(s) is she/you playing?

My daughter has been cast in summer stock in Iowa. She is very excited.

AliMom's D (HS senior)- Lillian Russell Theatre, Clinton Iowa (Cast as Woman in I Love You, You're Perfect, No Change; Roxie Hart in Chicago; The Foreigner; You Can't Take It With You)

Wonder of Wonder, Miracle of Miracles....

Both Ds will be working at Great Plains Theater in Kansas. D1 (UCO senior) will be Brooke in Noises Off and Nancy in Bye Bye Birdie. D2 (UCO freshman) will play Kim McAfee in Bye Bye Birdie. They will earn equity points, get paid and are provided housing.

This may well be the only time they get to perform together (other than when they lived at home and performed locally). The past 3 summers they have performed at different theaters....in different states. We are so glad they will be together once again.....

2Ds, how much fun will that be for your daughters to be able to perform at the same theatre. And that should definitely make it easier on you!

Thanks, Alismom. Yes, we are looking forward to our trip to Kansas!

I need to edit my post....my senior D is graduating from OCU (not UCO).....I was typing too fast to notice my mistake!

OK, exposing my massive-but-rapidly-diminishing ignorance of these things: what, exactly, is summer stock theater, other than a theater that stages shows exclusively in the summer? I am guessing (and could be wrong, which wouldn't be a gigundoly surprise! <g>) that some summer stock theaters offer Equity points to those cast in their shows, and others don't. Can anyone explain? I also am wondering: does the quality and prestige (sorry for mentioning this, but I do wonder!) of various summer stock theaters vary widely? Also (yet again!) are all actors in summer stock paid?</g>

NMR,
I'm no expert, but I'm happy to tell you what I know. Summerstock generally refers to theater companies that perform several/many shows during the summer season and hire one 'company' of actors to perform in those shows. Quite often the actors are rehearsing one show but performing another in the evenings...or performing more than one show at a time and rehearsing a third.
There is a variance in the quality of the theaters and not all offer equity points. Only those theaters that adhere to the equity rules/regulations can offer points (I think). Not all companies pay. In fact, there are a lot of them that may provide housing/board but not pay...more like an internship. There are some that even 'charge' for you to be a part of their company....pay to perform programs.
Once offers begin coming in, it is very important that students ask lots of questions so they can make an informed decision for the summer. It isn't like college auditions/admissions either in that you can research theater companies in advance (because you don't always know which companies will be attending a particular audition ie. MidWest, NETC, SETC, Strawhat, etc) AND there is no commonly recognized May 1 date by which you can make a decision. What has happened to my Ds is that they get offers and companies want to know quickly (in 48 hours or a week) but they may not have heard from all of the theater companies for which they had callbacks and you have to juggle how to negotiate the offers. Gets tricky. But in the end, it is just important to take the roles that you feel suit you best and that will offer you some measure of growth.

Thanks so much, 2DsnMT. That makes sense. Wow, 48 hours is not much time at all in which to make a decision! I am sure it's all great experience, though. AlisMom, is it unusual for a high school senior to be doing summer stock? Has your D ever done it before? Congrats to her.

The theatre that my daughter was offered summer stock at is using a guest director for the summer. He is the artistic director at a small professional non-equity theatre in our area where she played Luisa in The Fantasticks last fall and was just cast as Phillia in Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. They had auditions at the theatre here (and asked my daughter if she'd be interested in auditioning) and went to Iowa for auditions as well.
My D is an Equity Membership Candidate but will not earn equity points for her summer stock productions as it is not an equity theatre. She will be considered a "guest actor" and receive pay, room and board.

It's like 2Ds explained, they will be performing five shows in three months with about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks between the shows and each show lasting a couple of weeks (I think about 10-12 productions per show). I think as a company member in summer stock at many theatres that you are utilized for everything, ie: if you aren't cast in a show, then you work tech. It's a great learning experience and nice to know you have steady work for at least 3 months!

bump......

Hey all,

I'll be doing Peter Pan and Millie at Merry-Go-Round this summer.

I'll be doing Kismet, Millie, Joseph, Aida, and 1776 at Surflight in NJ this summer. I got the job out of Strawhats and it was my top choice, so I'm thrilled! Any info on theatre anyone?

Congrats Brendan. LBI is a great place to spend the summer. We saw jasmom's son in a show at Surflight last summer. Maybe she could put you in touch with him if you have any questions.

congrats BrendanN that is a VERY good theatre!

Thanks! I'm really excited, but a little scared for this summer. If nothing else, it'll be an incredible learning experience. I just hope I don't wipe myself out before sophomore year, when performing is finally allowed. I start classes the day after my last performance at Surflight....should be crazy.
