A friend of mine is interested in going to graduate school for Musical Theatre Directing. So far I know he's looking at Penn State and he said one other, but those are the only two he can find an the country. If anyone has any insight on this, I'd be very thankful so I can pass it along to him! He's just a sophomore now, but the more prepared- the better!

There are not many graduate programs of this kind. I believe it is the same way with MT Directing graduate school programs as non-MT Directing Graduate programs… most programs are going to be looking for students who have been out of school working professionally for a few years. I am a graduate of the Penn State Directing program… last class before the focused the Directing program specifically on Musical Theatre. At that time most of us in the directing program were in our mid to late 20s at the youngest. The people I know who have attended the Penn State MT Directing program fit this bill as well. So, it is worth your friend exploring the graduate school option, but also looking for early career internship opportunities for aspiring directors for years between undergrad and grad school.

I would be happy to communicate with your friend about my experiences in the Directing Program at Penn state and put him in touch with friends who are alums of the MT focused program. Tell him to feel free to email or PM me.

:)

Thank you so much, KatMT! I will send him along. :)

Alexa - I agree with KatMT, Penn State is the “go-to” program for MT direction.
