NYU Tisch, BFA Drama, MT Studio – may not be current
This was the Tisch MT first semester freshman course list back in 2012 so take it for what it is worth. One can add in an additional 2 credit class to the list without paying more but most first semester freshman don’t and would be advised against it first semester while adjusting. I think this is probably fairly close enough to current but things can change year to year in any program. Feel free to correct it if someone knows better. This is info I’d like to have had easy access to when we were looking at schools (along with how many hours were spent/week in each class to get a true sense of the load) and it isn’t always easy to tease it out. Good idea @KaMaMom.
• Private Voice
• Introduction to Theatre Studies (FYI, you either take this first semester or you take Intro to Theatre Production then the opposite the following semester)
• Writing the Essay (this is the equivalent of Freshman English and you take it two semesters)
• Ballet
• Voice
• Song Performance
• Sight Singing
• Acting
• Vocal Performance
• Music Theory
• Contemporary
• Keyboarding
• Speech
Spring semester freshman was more or less a continuation of the same classes except that instead of keyboarding, they added in an additional music theory class session. Some students took a 2 credit keyboarding/piano class through Steinhardt that semester to continue that skill building on top of the above.
I have all of the other semester’s details through junior year and if anyone ever wants it, feel free to PM me since you will never find it on the Tisch website. (It isn’t there.)
To add on to the info halflokum posted, I thought I would share my D’s schedules at NYU Stella Adler studio. Thought the differences between acting and MT might be interesting.
ITS and ITP are same- kids from all studios take together (nice way to meet others) ITP more “hands on”, included crew requirement. I think the advice on NOT taking an “extra” 2 credits 1st semester is very sound. 2nd semester last year D took private voice as 2 credit elective.
Studio Classes:
Voice and Speech
Adler technique
Scene study
Movement (lots of flexibility work)
Character
Modern dance
Shakespeare
Improv
@halflokum reminded me that I forgot to add 2 semesters of the infamous “writing the essay” (WTE- which often had a different and more colorful nickname among D’s peers) Easily the most academically challenging class from this year- This made up a fat chunk of D’s “HW”. But, much as D grumbled, it really pushed her to Improve her writing. Plus it has a delightful “right of passage” element- something all NYU students have shared…

@theaterwork - in many of the programs there are minimal gen ed requirements. Some kids come in with the AP credit and don’t have to take it. Each school is different and often you can find a theatre equivalent. At most my D has had two gen eds in a semester and it’s just because she wants them done by the end of junior year. And they happen to fit in her schedule that semester
Vocal Study (private lesson)
Ballet I
Voice I
Stagecraft
Acting I
Music Theory Fundamentals
Elementary Ear-Training I
Music Theatre Chorus
Paranov Performance Hour
Rhetoric and Writing I
Information Literacy in the Performing Arts
(18.5 credits)
Spring Semester:
Vocal Study (private lesson)
Ballet I
Voice II

Acting II
Diatonic Harmony
Elementary Ear-Training II
Music Theatre Chorus
Paranov Performance Hour
Rhetoric and Writing II
(18 credits)
They do take a math course, but not until senior year. In Sophomore year, there are All University Curriculum (AUC) courses added (one 3 credit course per semester) and an elective thrown in there somewhere, but it is definitely a conservatory-style program. My D has AP credits that place her out of both semesters of Rhetoric and Writing, as well as Music Theory Fundamentals but those will be replaced with some other courses in that track that have yet to be determined. She has not gotten her finalized schedule yet, but her days will be pretty jam packed.
