D did Saturday school and got one of those truancy letters (ours are computer generated by the school system). But you do what you have to do! It will be fine.

For public school students and parents: Schools are bound by state law, just as the dean said. A lot of people don’t understand this because the climate has changed a great deal in the last 5 years. But the state comes down on the schools for absences and schools have a lot less autonomy. If the school happens to be under the microscope of the state at the time, for whatever reason (usually state testing scores) or if the superintendent or principal is, their hands will be tied a lot more. Lately, the state has made a lot more threats. If your child is absent beyond the legal number of days allowed, it is irrelevant what sort of student she is. Schools used to have a lot more leeway in excusing absences. However, there are ways around the state requirements. The key is to find the person who has the power to excuse the absences. You say that the sports team has missed days–but that was a school sanctioned activity. If for instance you go on a field trip, that counts as a legal excused absence. If you travel with the sports team on a school related activity, that counts as a legal excused absence. Choosing to go on auditions does not count as a state recognized excused absence. So what you need to do is to find a person who is willing to go to bat for you–this could be the dean or someone else. THere are ways to excuse the absence. This can include visiting the superintendent and discussing the matter. The key is to be polite and to ask how to solve this problem. Being accusatory - not saying you are, just as a heads up- will not help at all because they are not happy wtih this situation either. In all the schools I’ve been in, the princiapl has the power to excuse the absences at a “principal’s hearing.” It’s sort of like veto power. So you want the principal or dean on your side. They can only use the ‘excused absence override’ x times, but they may be willing to go to bat for you. Worse case scenario would be summer school, but I think if you are persistent and find the right person, you should be able to solve this. Good luck.

It’s all about money…if your child’s butt is not in his/her seat the school loses money. In my D’s case $75.00 a day for every absence. In the state of CA even an excused absence results in a loss of money.

D graduated in December due to this very thing. She said last night that it was the best decision she ever made. Definitely took the stress off of college audition season, plus she is auditioning for regional theatre companies as well.

@connections - I understand the situation, and even if I don’t like it I’ve got to play the diplomat. Getting crappy with someone won’t move us towards the goal of getting D to her auditions AND getting her graduated.

@bisouu - in the end, it’s always about the money, and the chain runs all the way from our district to the state to the federal government.

Sorry to have turned this into the vent thread.

On a bright note, the Dean of Admissions from the school that gave D a position verbally during Chicago Unifieds sent her a hand written note yesterday stating that the MT department really wants her and to call him if she has any questions about the school. Which is nice. (cue Bill Murray)

@cheeseheadmike - The Dean at that school is really a nice guy and has an open door policy not surprised he sent that out.

Seems like people are already getting some results (no’s) from Ithaca, so news may come sooner than expected in terms of that. Also, does anyone know when we will hear from Rider?

@SpotConlon - Have you heard how kids are receiving no’s? Via email, snail mail, or disabling of MyIthaca account?

For Rider, check your application status.

DoReMiMom, I got my no from Ithaca through snail mail. But I was invited to apply to another program so that might be why they didn’t deactivate my MyIthaca account.

Riders final audition is 2|22 so shouldn’t be long after. Online status is updated first.

There’s an extremely interesting thread from last year around this time on the Ithaca board about their notification process, if anybody’s interested. <a href=“Decisions '13? - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ithaca-college-mt/1457043-decisions-13-p1.html

Hahaha, I don’t know what to think about re-reading my constant blathering about that process on last year’s thread–kind of painful to revisit it now. It really was a crazy time, especially that week between when my son’s audition status “moved over” on MyIthaca and when it said “accepted.” I truly hope for all y’all’s sakes that they have streamlined their process and made it less nerve-wracking!

I just read that entire thread and my heart raced and I was stressed as if it was current news. Thanks, Asst!! HA!
