Hi! I was wondering if any parents/ students would be willing to share any of the criterea that they were looking at when looking into MT schools. My D has a comprehensive list, but I am checking and double checking to be sure she is researching every possible avenue.

Here is what we have:
What degrees are offered?
How large is the MT class? Does it vary from year to year?
How integrated are the MT majors with the Acting majors?
Is casting seem "fair"?
Are freshman allowed to audition?
How large are individual classes?
Variety of productions (straight plays vs. musicals, new work?)
Is there a dance program integrated? Can MT also take part in dance concerts?
What "types" of spaces are students able to perform in?
How are professions used in the program: are tehy brought in to speak, does faculty work professionally?
How long has the MT major been around?
Does the music school and the theatre program work together?
What "professional" guidance, if any , is given.
What is a "typical day" in teh life of a MT look like?

ANYTHING anyone could add whould be MUCH appreciated. I know that the answers are things that can really sway decisions (diff programs fit diff needs).

Importance of HS GPA, SAT/ACT and or course load/selection to School/Department Admittance
What are recent alumni doing today?
How are scholarships awarded? merit or talent?
Is there a cut system?
What is the typical background of admitted students?
Are department students housed with those in the same department or are they
“disbursed” around campus?
How late are campus dining facilities open? (kinda important to know, as some smaller schools close their dining facilities early or have limited hours on the weekend)
Approximate number of admitted students in a Freshman MT class
When is your application available?
Do you have to have the complete application submitted before scheduling an audition?
Describe your Study Abroad Program (if applicable)
Are there any performing opportunities off campus?

The most important question for us when my D was researching various schools years ago was to have a very close look at each school’s curriculum, for all four years of the program. In my opinion, that should be at the top of a student’s list.

Also make sure to look in the course catalog to see what additional courses are offered to the required courses. Them ask if all of those courses are available to MT majors.
