I was just wondering how Montclair is with transfer students? I’m currently a sophmore theatre studies major at Wright State University. I’ll be auditioning next winter which would be my junior year at WSU for Montclair’s MT program. I have every intention of re-starting school for 4 years if accepted into the program. Does anyone know any info on transfer students who get in or Montclair’s policy with transfer students in the MT program? All help is appreciated!

Yes, Montclair excepts transfer students into their MT Program. I know a MT transfer who is beginning her freshman year in the program.

She completed her freshman year at another university (non-MT). She auditioned last winter and was notified in mid-March of her acceptance.

The dept. chair was/is very supportive of her. I believe that she was 1 of 2 transfers into this years freshman MT class. She absolutely loves it… the training, proximity to NYC and her peers.

I also know someone who transferred to Monclair MT. This person transferred after one year of college, and I believe able to graduate on time.

Montclair may consider transfer graduation time on a case by case basis. The head of the program there is very nice. It would not hurt to contact him directly to get an idea of the possibilities.

Even if you do not need to? Depending on the program and the number of general education and theatre academic classes that transfer you may be able to transfer into a strong MT program and complete your requirements in less than 4 years. It will depend on the program. Since you are so close to completing your undergraduate degree have you considered also looking at MFA, MM, or MA MT programs? Both the BFA route and the masters degree route may be worth looking into for you. You have completed so much of your undergrad degree you have many options! Good luck!!!

Well since I haven’t taken many Gen Eds here at Wright State i’ll probably have to start all over again. I’ve only completed English and Pyschology here. I only take voice and dance and a few other select theatre classes that BA theatre studies studets can take. There are only so many classes that BA’s can take at Wright State in the Theatre program since Theatre Studies is non audition. Even if I have to start again in an MT program the knowledge and time spent growing will be much more of a reward to me in helping me get to my goals career wise!

Most Conservatory MT programs follow a very structured sequential model, therefore transfers do need to follow the complete 4 year format. Montclair is such a program and transfers will begin as freshman.

The good news is that you will most likely transfer your gen-ed credits, enabling you to take a lighter course-load during the semesters which your peers will be taking their gen-eds.

You may have time to minor or double major if this interests you.

Hey! I’m applying to MSU for transfer MT this year, too. I’m a freshman at another school this year, and I went to the Arts Days and the chair of the department said that some of my credits would transfer but for other credits (mostly dance) I would have to start with freshman level classes. Hope this helps! and I hope to see you there in the fall!
