MT w/ a double major suggestions?

Hi, I'm a current junior in high school and starting to think seriously about pursuing theatre in college. I live in Cincinnati and am interested in CCM because of its amazing triple threat program as well as the possibility of studying creative writing at UC in addition to MT. however, I'm not so sure I could get into CCM, lol. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of schools were I could have a similar experience/opportunity, but also a chance to get accepted. Distance from Ohio isn't really a major concern.

Hey! I’m also looking at CCM for both their Musical Theatre and their Vocal Performance program. On their site, they say that some students qualify to double major at CCM and at McMicken (for most majors; exceptions include communications, political science, and psychology.)
ALSO - (some advice I know you didn’t ask for but I would have appreciated when I was a junior) start on choosing you audition materials NOW. Well, it doesn’t have to be NOW, but ASAP! I’m going to be a senior this coming year and I really truly wish I had gotten myself sorted before; it’s kind of like a mad scramble now.
Hope I helped! :)

Hi FMAyodele. My D is also looking at CCM for both MT and VP. Just curious - are you interested in opera? Musical theatre? not sure?
right now she’s probably more interested in musical theater, but honestly isn’t completely sure what direction she wants to go in (especially given her vocal type). She’s also interested in music theory and composition. Good luck to you and catdona as well!

Deciding to double major is a very important decision and can play a huge role in which schools you look at. Double majoring with musical theater will take more than 4 years because of the immense amount of credits (this is if you are double majoring in something besides fine arts).
Rider University is an amazing new program and it allows double majors for people who demonstrate the drive to be able to complete the course load and requires approval of dean to take more than the amount of credits that mt majors take (17).
That said I am an incoming freshman who is double majoring in BFA Musical Theater and Business with a speciality in international business or finance. I’m also doing the two honors programs offered at the college (which basically just change a couple of your core credits and electives to an honors class which is usually a smaller seminar).
And I’m playing Varsity Tennis for the school.
This all being said. It is very difficult and may take some sacrifices from me on maybe not getting cast in certain shows but it was very important to me to do all these things while I’m in college and they are able to work with it.
Oklahoma City university is another option that will consider double major.

Hi lcoulter!! I’m very, very interested in both. The thing is I tend to fluctuate between both depending on what I’m doing at a given time (i.e.-if I have a voice recital coming up, I’m interested in opera) but after sitting down and thinking about it I realized that whichever one I end up doing I will be happy.

That’s great, FMAyodele! D fluctuates also, but I think is less certain about long term goals than you seem to be. Except - number 1 thing she wants to do - perform / sing on stage for a living. good luck to you!
