So I'm torn between the Music Business, Audio Production, and Commercial Songwriting majors at MTSU. I recently have realized that I want to transfer to a school for a music program since it's something I've been passionate about for a while now. Might as well do something with my life that I actually enjoy doing, right?

I'm still not really sure the route I want to take in the Recording Industry in terms of a career, though, so that's where my problem arises. I love playing music, recording music, creating music, listening to music, and talking about music, so I could fit in anywhere I suppose.

Does anyone have any insight regarding these three majors at this school? Anything could help really, I know my buddy was the in Audio Production and enjoyed it. I'd also like to know which would be more beneficial career-wise. A dream job would be picking the music that gets played in music or something.

You sound like my son So, do you enjoy recording OTHER PEOPLE’S music as much as your own? Or is it the “creation” aspect that satisfies you the most? And which aspect are you the most talented at? What do people say to you about your work, for example.

I do know the audio production program is very well regarded, and I am pretty certain you’ll be able to access the other areas if you pursue that route nonetheless, but I do think that you should take into consideration precisely which aspects of production you enjoy (eg. do you really like sound reinforcement? how many of the courses have a live sound focus…are you more heavily interested in sequencing?; etc. – then read their course outline.)

Best wishes.

My son chose a more technical program, SRT at UMass Lowell over music industry. The determining factor came down to this. His guitar teacher said music styles come and go, but there will always be a need for technology.
