Hello everyone. I'm curious about Mu Alpha Theta. It turns out my school does not have a chapter and I'm thinking about starting one. What does it take to start one? Has anyone started one, and if so, would you be so kind to share your experiences? How did it turn out?
If you're a member of Mu Alpha Theta--what did you guys do each meeting? Did you like it? What benefits did it provide?
Thank you very mind for your kind answers. I appreciate them. :)

*Thank you very much
0_o Weird typo.
Bumpity bump bump.

Please answer, I am interested aswell.

It explains everything there.

I think I'm going to start one at my school to then.

We provide free math tutoring before and after school one or two days a week and a few MAO kids come to do the actual tutoring... We've also done different charity fundraisers in the past... Other than that we don't do too much to be honest. Ooooohh, and we had Pi Day last year with Pi-dye tee shirts and a moon "pi" eating contest... etc. There were "pi's" posted all around the school... It was quite fun!

That's exactly what I want to do aswell. Start a combined Math - Tutoring club under the name "Mu Alpha Theta." I think it'll be good ;)

Thank you for the info. I've looked at the petition and everything, but has anyone here had experiences starting clubs? I've never done it before so I just want to know what it's like. How much work is it? Do you have to be like super math nerdy to start such a club? My math is really good, but it's not like I look Calculus freshman/sophomore year like some people.

eh, it's really hard to start your own chapter...it's a TON of work and you need at least one sponsor from your school. The whole point of MAO is the national competition. It's quite pointless to be in MAO and not go... If you're not on math team, then it's probably not gonna work.
Sucks to those who don't live by a chapter...

I used to think MAO was great, but now I really hate it.

I started my school's math team and used that to start a MAO chapter. MAO as a contest is really lame because it's mostly computational math and just using formulas, like in a classroom. Strangely, if you look at this year's Mu tests, they gave you the formulas to use, and all you had to do was plug in the numbers and calculate. The problems are "hard" in a sense only because they are really tedious and time consuming; there are hardly any nice solutions to MAO problems.

If you are interested in a math team kind of thing, things like AMC/AIME/USAMO are much better.

MAO?

i'm also looking to start one at my school.
is it really a lot of work to start this club?
it seems generally easy, although maybe it sounds easier
than it actually is. :/ was recruiting people hard?

MAO is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhh i love it!! It's so much fun (socially). The tests are extremely hard though!!! We normally just work on studying our subject til we finish the book then do practice tests. During general meetings we go over events coming up (ex. pi day) and upcoming events.

can you go more in detail with the events that you guys hold?
and what does MAO stand for? and how can your school apply for them?

sorry for all the questions.
i really know nothing about this.

Sorry for bumping this thread.

Where can I find the Mu Alpha Theta petition?
Where can I find deadlines?
