I am deciding between these three dorms.
Which one do you recommend the most?

I care about:
good dorm community
good room sound-proof quality
semi private bathrooms
surroundings

Morewood E has floor bathrooms and is loud as hell, so that’s no good.

Henderson is nice in terms of living space, but when I had friends living there, my impression was that it was a little bit… self-righteous. The whole concept of Henderson is that people who want to live “holistic, healthy” lives need to be somehow separated from everyone else and given their own space in order to do so. That means no drinking (even if you’re legal), no smoking, no unhealthy behaviors, etc – you sign a contract when you start living there.

It’s an interesting concept but my philosophy is that freshman year is that time when everyone gets exposed to all kinds of strange and wonderful and terrible things they’ve never experienced before. So going for Henderson kind of puts a damper on that.

I lived in Mudge for three years and love it deeply. It’s got semi-private bathrooms (one per 2 rooms) and the quads in A tower have totally private bathrooms with walk-in closets. Plus David (housefellow) is a super nice dude. Go live there!

Thanks for the input.
I was thinking the same.
I wanted to go for Mudge, but I am afraid that I’d be getting the basement rooms.
Is there any way to avoid getting those rooms?

Thanks!

Adding on to geekinblack’s post,

How is Residence on Fifth?

Residence of Fifth is amazing, its very underestimated.
All of this is inside your apartment:
Kitchen with fridge: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/294485_10150409152873835_7625069_n.jpg
Two rooms, living and bedroom: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/295960_10150409152923835_5329999_n.jpg
This is inside the bedroom, to the left is a closet that even for girls, can be shared by two, and to the right is your own bathroom: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/293270_10150409152973835_2671354_n.jpg
bathroom: https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/296225_10150409153073835_858341_n.jpg
the bedroom, you can bunk or you can put them next to each other, my roommates didn’t bunk and there was still lots of space: https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/296675_10150409153308835_3893288_n.jpg
the view of the bedroom and bathroom space from the other side https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/254640_10150409153433835_4208482_n.jpg
this is one of last year’s RA’s living room, pretty packed yet very spacious (this is from the middle of the room, behind this person is the kitchen) https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/262066_10150219801458341_8094423_n.jpg

I would not pick Henderson as a freshman, it’s just not the same experience. If you decide you want that kind of dorm, you can live there sophomore-senior year if you’d like, but at least give freshman housing a try.

Mudge and E-Tower are similar unless you can get rooms in the mansion section of Mudge, in which case you get a suite (like two bedrooms connected by a common room), which is quite nice I hear.

Res on the Fifth is exceptionally nice, it has A/C and yet doesn’t have tiny rooms (unlike Stever). However it’s also a good 10 minutes farther from campus than any other dorm (it’s not too far from Hamerschlag Hall, Scaife, Gates, etc. But places like Baker, Doherty, and Tepper especially will be quite the trek).

Also, IIRC you don’t get to choose (except Henderson, Boss, etc.), you just list your preferences and are selected based on when you send your deposit in. Which is good news if you’re early decision, bad news otherwise. If you’re male and you didn’t send your deposit in until the last few days, expect the hill.

this should help
