Hey guys,
I'm trying to decide between Elon and Muhlenberg. I've essentially been accepted into both schools. I have a 3.67 gpa and 34 act score. Anyone have insight on the benefits/detractions for either option?

Where do you live? What are you planning to major in?

hi tick: daughter was deciding on exactly same schools before ED deadline this year; ended up ED to Elon and is attending next fall…

For her:
Elon seemed more like a true college experience; larger size; more opportunities to meet more people, etc…more academic opportunities in areas she was interested in (communications)…

Loved Muhlenberg for the people she met, same at Elon

She was most concerned that Muhlenberg would be too small and insulated for her personally; lots of NY/NJ kids…others may feel differently; it’s a GREAT place; we all loved it but we let her decide…

One more thing:COA is significantly less at Elon, even including numerous trips home if desired…

if you could provide more info as to what you are interested in going forward, maybe we could be of more help…
based on your stats, you could be eligible for merit at both places as well (Fellows application at Elon, though, was due last Monday)

btw, not for nothing, how are you “essentially” in at both schools unless you applied ED to Muhlenberg? they haven’t released RD yet…

im planning on going premed. im from westchester ny.

Yeah I missed out on the fellows applications at Elon which makes the decision more complex.

I did an early read and was estimated $20,000 scholarship and got a mailing about the muhlenberg danas scholars today, which is why i say essentially into both.

My biggest elon concern is that so far I haven’t met any people there that I have clicked with, whereas Muhlenberg I have made about 10 really amazing friends, and have clicked with everyone else I have met while visiting.

i also want to participate in the theater/music department at whichever school i go to.

Based on a few things you have said - I would say Muhlenberg. You seem to click with students there more easily, it’s a great school for pre-med and for theater/arts. And the scholarship you have mentioned should make Muhlenberg LESS expensive that Elon. It sounds like a very good fit for you.

tick: I think you answered your own question…and pre-med at Muhlenberg is amazing…enjoy your time at the 'Berg!!!

Tick, I think that it is a really easy decision. Muhlenberg has a great pre-med program and theater program, both of the things that you are looking for. Since you also said that you already made friends from Muhlenberg and not from Elon, that is a good sign as well. Even if the academics are good, if you don’t get along with the other students college won’t be nearly as good and you might even decide to transfer out. So I say go with Muhlenberg…it def seems like the right choice for you. And the squirrels agree.

shoshana 2458, my concern is that I havent gotten a good sample of the people at elon. It’s a big school, so maybe i just havent found my group.

But since you have been communicating with both groups I feel as though if you have made friends in one and not the other that is a sign. It is impossible to get along with everyone (no) but if you get on with most in one group and few in another than that say something.

I agree with the others. Of course, I am not the person to tell you where you should go to college. But you seem to be leaning towards Muhlenberg, and I think that you’re just looking for some confirmation. You’ve got it. You have already made friends at Muhlenberg, and with the likelihood of your being in an honors program, you know that the academics will certainly be challenging enough for you. All I can say now is GOOD LUCK, and I hope that you make the best decision for you in the end. Either school will be extremely lucky to have you. :]

I’d talk to both about theater opportunities if they’re important-- Elon has a pretty serious BFA program which might mean less chance to get involved if you’re not in the dept. (But it does sound as if your decision is nearly made already.)

Also tick? I think that it’s telling that you missed the deadline for the fellows program at elon.

do you guys know anything about the allentown area? That’s the thing a lot of blogs seem to say is a huge negative about the campus.

Allentown is certainly not a “college town” per se. Its a mid-size city that’s part of the larger Lehigh Valley region (about 1 million people), which has all the amenities and some of the same problems as similar size areas, but with a much larger college concentration than most (Lehigh, Lafayette, DeSales, Moravian, Cedar Crest etc.). Because of its close proximity to NY and Philly, the Lehigh Valley has long suffered from an acute case of metro area inferiority complex which is gradually diminishing. The campus itself is in a very nice area, the “West End”.
