Muhlenberg College

OK, so this school is looking interesting and I read some old threads about it but am wondering about current students there for info, this is a BA in Acting with minors in dance and voice? Therefore giving you a MT track per se? Also I see it is pricey so wondering about aid and how generous they are…Also…no audition but is there an audition later then?

I believe the audition for Muhlenberg is for scholarships only and if I recall correctly, I believe those were in the Fall so if you are interested, definitely plan to visit/audition there early on, especially if you want to be considered for talent $. I do not know if the stack academic and talent scholarships or not. But as usual, check to see what this year’s audition calendar might be and their current policies
. We have a friend who is there who is a ballerina. She adores it. But she is not in the MT track.

Muhlenberg was my D’s safety- and it had a LOT of nice elements. Really nice facilities, gorgeous campus, and a very versatile curriculum that would let you build a focus in a number of different directions. They do offer an audition for scholarships (only M-F, which was less than convenient, but we worked it out) which made a great “real life warm up” for other schools. Charles Richter, the head of the dept is extremely personable, easy to contact and great with questions and information. (Reminds me of @KatMT  ) My D got very generous merit aide there, including a special scholarship (Dana scholars? Name escaping me) which they notified her she was being considered for (required an extra essay) well before admission results and came with message “it’s fair to think this is a good sign”.

Overall, I really really liked the school, and would have been happy to have D attend. She has two friends there - both love it.

Thanks so much for some info! I think it will be a safety school for sure. Do you know if there is an audition later, like sophomore year that you have to pass etc? We live less then 4 hrs from Allentown so close by.

I don’t remember a sophomore audition (and was vigilant with avoiding “cut” type programs) but don’t have any specific info

I have never heard of a later audition once admitted, but check directly with the school just to make sure.

Just chiming in - we have a friend who is a Dance Major at Muhlenberg, and she loves it there. I believe she is double majoring in something else. She was a National Merit Scholar which I believe brought some pretty major $$ her way.

Muhlenberg is a hidden gem. They have a great theater department. You do have to audition if you want a theater scholarship. You only do it before your first year. They are very pricey, but they are also good with merit aid. They are very interested in getting to know you before you apply and they take a high percentage of their class ED. I suggest a visit. Do the official admissions visit. See if you can arrange something with the theater department. If you like it, do the interview and the audition. Best of luck to you!

M was my boys’ non audition safety. They chose not to do auditions for talent scholarships, but both got pretty generous academic merit offers. You may be able to find a merit aid calculator on their website and plug in your kid’s stats to get general idea of aid based on grades/scores.

Both Ds were interested in Muhlenberg. Older d won $19.5k in merit money which was their max at the time… It’s even higher now. She got a scholarship for academics/ leadership and talent $ for voice and art.

Younger d was interested in art and would have maybe double majored in voice or theatre. She had an interview that was very positive and we were told to contact sômene for an early read for merit aid before she even applied. Talent $ would have been stacked with that.

Definitely interview , visit and audition and merit money over $20k is possible-- even without need.

Loved Muhlenberg! Good merit aid stacked with talent award. They do take perceived interest into account, so interview with an admissions counselor, and keep in touch with them by email. Also audition with Charlie Richter for a scholarship. He is a great guy and a wonderful ambassador for the school. D thinks she would have been happy there had the conservatory-in-a-big-city thing not panned out. I don’t know that they would work for everyone as a safety school though because they are not by any means an automatic admit scholastically.

What does it mean that this was moved? Is the discussion continued somewhere else or was this moved here? Sorry do not know how this all works yet.

@joyfulmama, it’s likely been moved to the individual school thread at the top of the MT major home page.
