Muhlenberg - Is Theater too competitive?

We were interested in looking at Muhlenberg since it seems to be good fit for my artsy, theatrical child. She loves to write as well. She was hoping to continue performing in theatrical productions while at college, but she is not a super star by any means and has no plans to make a professional go at it. Will she still have the opportunity to be in the school’s theater productions or will she be shut out by the many very talented theater kids I am told who go there?

You may want to ask your question in the Theater forum:

or on the Muhlenberg College forum:

Moving to Theater forum.

Here’s a thread with some comments on that issue (starting with post #11): http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/21693432#Comment_21693432

I might suggest that your daughter contact the theater department and ask this very question. Talk to Charlie Richter, Director of the Theater, and ask him. He’ll be honest with her. There is much competition for the starring roles but there are many other roles that might satisfy her need to be involved that might be a good option for her. Muhlenberg is a great community. The students are supported and given lots of opportunities to try new things and grow both intellectually and socially. Its certainly worth a phone call. Best of luck to you!

@beenthereanddone Thanks for your suggestion. I hadn’t thought of that.

One thing that Muhlenberg is known for is having many opportunities for the students to participate. My DD18 is a freshman. She wanted a slower, less intense transition into college compared to her schedule packed HS years. She didn’t audition for any mainstage productions, but decided to try the Red Door productions done completely by fellow students. She got a lead in one and is happily preparing for that. She also loves her theater class this semester and raves about both the lecture and lab professors.
She has a friend who got a mainstage lead this fall as a freshman.
