I am seriously considering Muhlenberg College, but I have heard mixed reviews about their social scene, and I'm not talking about school-sponsored events.

I heard that on weekends it is very boring with not a lot of parties, and if there are parties, they are often raided. I have also heard the flip side, saying that frats and sororities hold events.

I am in no way saying that partying is the only thing I am interested in at college. I just want to pick a school where I know that on weekends, there is more to do than a mall or movies.

Where are you ‘hearing’ about mixed reviews?

There will be plenty to do on weekends if the mall or movies are not your cup of tea! I can say with much certainty that my daughter probably didn’t see more than six movies in Allentown her entire four years at the 'Berg.

Yes to parties and yes to the Greeks also holding events. You have to remember, though, that the school is in a rather upscale neighborhood and the school’s president does not look fondly upon students infringing on those neighbors’ rights to peace and quiet. They do take it serious if off-campus parties start to get out of hand and neighbors start to complain.

I’ve heard reviews ranging from “You’ll have more fun in a convent” and “Nothing to ever do” to things like “Always plenty of fun!”

I just didn’t know what to believe.

From my daughter’s experience the party scene is there if you want it, not really worse or better than other similar size schools that she has visited. One difference with Muhlenberg is the proximity to so many other colleges in the area, plus the the Lehigh Valley as a pretty large metro area has lots to do - but you will need to drive or take a bus to most things off campus.

The chatter I hear and see on campus is that Muhlenberg attracts kind, thoughtful, serious students - most of whom have fulfilling social lives. However, ‘party animals’ may feel that the raucous parties they crave are lacking. In the area, you might prefer Lehigh or Villanova if you want more of a party scene. There are also a few websites which rate alcohol and drug use on campuses. Muhlenberg tends to score on the lower part of the scale.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I don’t want to come off as some crazy party animal. I do take my studies seriously. I just want to make sure that I can loosen up on weekends by doing something fun.
