Muhlenberg vs Marymount Manhattan

Other than their location differences, can anyone compare and comment on the quality of training/reputations of these two schools?

Bump. I have the same question

I would encourage you to closely compare the curriculums of the 2 programs. Look up the faculty and their backgrounds. Most importantly, spend as much time as you can at each school. Go to as many classes as you can. Insist on it. What might be a “better” school for one person might not be the best school for another. I’ve never been to Muhlenberg, but it sounds like these schools are wildly different. Marymount requires an audition and Muhlenberg does not, but from what I’ve heard, Muhlenberg has facilities to die for and an excellent program. Also, Marymount does just one musical a year and not all students can be cast in it, so if performance opportunities are important, Muhlenberg might be a better option. But I can’t stress enough how important it is to get your own feel for each school.

I am concerned about the lack of college feel at Marymount, yet the reason I’m there is for good theatre training and internships. On the other hand, muhlenberg doesn’t have that many broadway alumni and a strict BA program which concerns me

My D is doing her Marymount audition in February. That is her #1 choice. She visited the school in October and loves it. My husband took her on the visit and he said he too felt it was a perfect fit for her. She also applied to Mulhenberg. We are from Philadelphia originally, but now live in Florida. She hasn’t visited Mulhenberg. She wants to be in NYC or Philly. She was going to do the scholarship audition at Mulhenberg, but we aren’t now as we have too many other travel commitments with all the other schools. Since they don’t require an audition, we’ll just take our chances with this one. She has already been accepted to a non-audition BFA, as a back up plan. But Marymount is her 1st choice, and they also offered her a academic scholarship as well. So hopefully that will work out for us.

My D really loved Muhlenberg. It is a beautiful campus, great facilities and what appears to be excellent training in all aspects of theatre. Dance is highly emphasized. Charlie Richter (a lovely man and great ambassador for his school) conducts the tours and the scholarship auditions. If you are serious about this school, I would definitely do the audition. If he likes you, I get the impression he has some pull with admissions. Also do the admissions interview (can be done by phone) and start a relationship via email (ask questions, etc) with an admissions counselor. Muhlenberg is one of those schools that takes in to account demonstrated interest by the student in making their decisions. They are somewhat selective academically so it can’t really be considered a “safety” school.
Also they are more expensive than MMC but do offer merit and talent scholarships.

My D ultimately chose to attend an auditioned BFA (Roosevelt/CCPA) because she was concerned about the large size of the theatre department at Muhlenberg. When we asked Mr. Richter about performance opportunities, he stated that “the cream rises to the top”. I don’t think my D was willing to take that chance. Plus she wanted the big city. ;-)

These two schools are about as different as night and day.

Performance opportunities are limited at both and both are BA programs. Marymount is academically a much easier admit. Most students who attend are looking for the NYC experience.
