muir: tioga/tenaya

does anyone remember whether or not the lounges had tv's in them and how big? also..there's some discrepancy of wi-fi now in both tenaya and tioga this year. can anyone confirm this?

I think someone has to bring the TV for the lounge. At least that’s what I’ve heard.

And as for the wireless discrepancy… it’s pretty much established that Tioga doesnt have wireless and Tenaya does. However if you have a room that is close to Tenaya (I believe on one of the earlier floors) then you may possibly pick up wireless. Otherwise you need to get a wireless router

I think they installed wireless now in Tioga. Not sure if the rumors were true, but hopefully it is true!

I highly doubt that. With how thick the walls are for tioga (since that was the style to build back in the day), it’s almost impossible to do that. I’m sure that if they could have installed wireless, they would have done so many many many years ago when they did the same for Tenaya

there is a tv in the common room that’s shared between both floors of the house, but the HAs keep it locked up unless you ask them to wheel it out. it’s probably like a 32" tv tops (and from the 90s, definitely not a plasma or anything). there aren’t televisions in the lounges shared between the two suites but if someone does bring one, don’t leave it out there overnight; lock it up in someone’s room unless you want it to get stolen.

and i heard that they were putting wireless in tioga over the summer but i’m not sure if it’s true either. if not, you can steal tenaya wifi from the lounges of the 10s/20s and 50s/60s suites.

Aren’t the walls the same thickness in both buildings? If they could do it in one, why not the other?

@ Comp Sci Guy: Thats a good point. I’m not entirely too sure. Well, we’ll see in a few weeks whether Tioga has wireless. Even if it doesnt, there are stores nearby that sell wireless routers as it is.

The walls are thick in ALL of the old Residence Halls. I’d recommend bringing an ethernet cable, because I gave up on UCSD’s wireless in the Res Halls. Cell phone connection sucks, too.

Does anyone happen to know how to handle window coverings in Tioga? Are there curtain rods or shades? There are some mornings it would be nice to block our the light and sleep late.

tioga has vertical blinds that can be rotated or pulled all the way open/closed. if you’re on the quad-facing side of the building, the sun shines directly into your room in the morning making it super bright and extremely hot (and there’s no air conditioning). it might be just as bad on the ocean-side of the building in the late afternoon, but idk.

you probably will want to get a thick blanket or curtain or something to hang over your window to block the light. bring some fans, too.

also, i’m pretty sure the only reason tioga doesn’t have wireless is because when both reshalls were being renovated a few years back, tioga was done the summer before tenaya and at that time they decided to skip out on the wireless for both buildings. then when they got around to renovating tenaya, they changed their mind and set up wireless.

random question, but do the windows have nets/screens in tioga…like to prevent bugs and stuff from coming in?

no nets or screens. there generally arent too many bugs around muir but there is a period (2 months max) when theres a lot of moths (and some of them are huge). make sure you close the bathroom windows at night.

no nets and screens mean easy jumping if you need to escape in a jiffy : )

Why do you think the GEs are so flexible? ;)
