Multi-tasking students

I just finished reading an old (3.27.2006) Time magazine article about our multitasking youth.

The article described students who cannot get between classes without making a call on their cell phone, do their homework while IMing and watching TV, and browse the 'net and answer e-mails during college lectures.

For those of you visiting college campuses -- have you observed this behavior? Is this techno "multitasking" threatening the ability of students to give academics the attention required?

I haven't observed it while on college campuses, but when my son is home, he is IMing while eating breakfast while programming while talking on his cell phone. Doesn't seem to slow him down any--it's more like he's using more of his brain.

His professors have been known to destroy cell phones that ring during class, and I gather no one would dare check their email either.

Well, it's good to hear at least some schools are insisting on cell-phone and e-mail free classes.

With most campuses going wireless, I fear that this may be the exception rather than the rule.
