Multicultural Sorority?... Anyone?

I've been looking around on campus, and I have not been able to find the kind of sorority I would like to join. So, I have decided to start one. I'd like to open up a chapter of Delta Xi Phi @ Cal.

I think it's awesome that we have culturally-based sororities, but I would like to be a part of a sorority that is truly multicultural. I want to be sisters with girls from backgrounds like and different from my own. I want to step out of my comfort zone and interact with all types of girls, not just with those who share the same culture as mine.

I have taken this info from Delta Xi Phi's national website:

Delta Xi Phi sisters direct their energies to supporting the following Five Pillars:

Advancement of Women through Higher Education: All of our active sisters attend weekly study hours to concentrate on why they are at college - to earn a degree! We award sisters with high gpa's as well as sisters who improve their gpa's. We also award the Brandy Nicole "Nikki" Murphy Memorial Scholarship in memory of our beloved sister.

Increasing Multicultural Awareness: We celebrate the diverse cultures that surround us through workshops, potluck dinners, international films, talent shows and other events. We also attend as many other cultural events on campus & in the community to increase our knowledge and appreciation for diversity.

Community Service: All active and associate members participate in individual and group community service. It is through service that we strengthen our bonds with each other and help improve the areas that we live in.

Sisterhood: Our unique bond of sisterhood starts in the associate member period and continues for life. Sisters at our chapters grow closer through celebrations, going to events and just plain hanging out together.

Friendship: Just as we extend friendship to each other, we extand it to our campus & communities. We show support by co-hosting and participating in events with greek-lettered organizations and other student & community groups.

(more info is available at Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. National Site)

Would anyone be interested in being a part of the the first class of Delta Xi Phi at Cal? How do you feel about this?

I truly hope that current students answer your call to action, BerkeleyLatina! As a Cal alum, I wanted to applaud you for your initiative and ambition regarding starting a chapter of a sorority whose goal is promotion of cultural diversity (amongst other worthwhile goals, of course).

I was a member of probably the most diverse sorority at the time (predominantly white, but also many girls of Latin or Middle Eastern descent). However, diversity was not the primary goal of the sorority.

I wish you the best of luck with generating interest in your new sorority. What a great leadership experience for you and the other co-founders!

it sounds like a great idea, but i wonder at the feasibility of it. how would you pick women to be in the sorority? would there be something like affirmative action to ensure that the sorority remains multicultural? it seems like it could easily become dominated by one race or another. still, i think it's a good idea, and i wish you the best of luck.

that sounds great!
