<p>and you know what else i like? us v. them mentality. especially when bush tries to "subtly" spread it. i think that's my favorite thing about politics.</p>

<p>I think the only reasonable immigration policy is one that accepts immigrants who have proven themselves to be successful. As opposed to accepting illegal immigrants who haven't even graduated high school we can be admitting advanced college graduates from poorer countries. The level of positive externality (I'd reckon that it might be negative) provided by a crop picker is far less than a PhD engineer.</p>

<p>And true, back in the early 1900's we didn't have good signals so we just let everyone in. Now, we have great signals for future success of immigrants. There is a reason why Indian's have started more companies in Silicon Valley than Mexicans, despite Mexicans outnumbering them hugely.</p>
