Does applying at the other academies(west point, annapolis) help your chances of receiving a congressional nomination or getting accepted by the academy? I’m 100% sure that i want to go to the air force academy and become an officer, but the others I’m not sure about.

then don't apply to the others if you wouldn't go. I don't think it would help you out, and it wouldn't help get a nomination with congresscritters. You wouldn't want them to give you a nom to annapolis if you won't go there would you?

No, it doesn't improve your chances of getting a nomination if you apply to more than one Academy. Most MOCs will only give you one nomination to one Academy, because they don't have slots to waste. If there aren't very many nomination applicants in your district, you may end up with more than one nomination, but that's only if they have extra. I also applied to West Point and Annapolis, and I ended up getting a nomination to USAFA and USMA from my congressman, and a nomination to Annapolis from a senator. It doesn't hurt to apply to more than one Academy, even if you're pretty sure you want to go Air Force, because there is a chance that you won't get accepted to USAFA but one of the sister Academies will want you. I was willing to be in any branch of the service, so it worked out for me to have them as backups (not backups... that sounds snotty... but you know what I mean :)) because I just wanted to be an officer and serve and experience the discipline of a service academy. So by all means, apply, but it doesn't help to sound wishy-washy in interviews if you can't decide which Academy is your first choice.

My son was sure he wanted to go to USNA, but applied to USMA and USAFA as a back up. After visiting all 3, he decided AFA was the best fit. Just thought I would throw that into the mix.

For me, it didn't matter what Academy I went into, but what I came out as. I want to be an Air Force officer, so I applied to USAFA and AFROTC only. The way I see it, the end result is all that matters.
