Hi, my school is very small (50 in my grade). I go to a private single sex college preparatory high school. Sometimes one senior in a year will get into an Ivy League, and sometimes no one in the senior class gets in. My friend and I are both seniors this year. She is an incredible athlete and student, and has been recruited to play at Brown. After being recruited she applied ED and got accepted. Brown is my top choice (applying RD), and my stats are as good as hers, with better leadership and ECs (except I am not a stellar athlete at all). Was it pointless of me to have applied? Is there any chance they would admit two students in one year, given my school’s background/history with Ivies? Any advice or knowledge is much appreciated.
They really don’t care about that. At my kids school, 4 got into Stanford one year, and none the next year. You apply on your own merits
The fact that your friend got it in will not automatically preclude you. However, it would also be a mistake to assume because you have similar stats and “better leadership and EC’s” (whatever that means) that it says anything about your chances of admissions. Recruited athletes go through a different process than other candidates. Without getting into the complicated details, each coach has a certain number of admissions spots (varies by sport) for recruits each year. While there are academic standards for these spots and Admissions has the final say, these kids get in because of their athletics. Your candidacy will be based on how you compare against other applicants on a holistic basis (grades, classes, test scores, EC’s, rec’s, essays, race, geography, etc…).
My graduating class of 47 had 6 kids matriculate to Brown. Even more got accepted.
That being said, most schools won’t have more than one kid accepted just given the odds/distribution of qualified students.
Edit: @BKSquared makes a very good point. Athletic recruitment is basically an entirely separate admissions process.
My D1 had two classmates from a class of 50 accepted to Dartmouth. Two other kids from that class also got into a prestigious film school with a low acceptance rate. Don’t sweat it. If you don’t get it, it probably won’t be because of the other kid from your school.
