Just a curiousity, but at one of my top schools, Goucher, I found out that many kids from my school are also applying, and are all pretty well qualified. They are all within range or above, some well above. I’m at a small private school where my senior class has a total of 82 students, 6 are applying that I know of and are all very interested. Will this change my chances or any of their chances of getting in? In my interview I was told that there was pretty much no reason why I wouldn’t get admitted based on my record, but would this change that? Would this be true of most schools?

i'm not an expert, but i would expect it would hurt your chances. colleges want to have a varied class, and so accepting numerous students from the same school, even the same area, will diminish that variation.

well i know a ucla representative said that for ucla, you are compared within the applicant pool from kids in your senior class

Well, it's a small private college that tends to get a lot of students from the northeast region, where I am. Academically, it's a safety for me, but for me personally, it's one of my top choices. I was just wondering if the fact that several other well qualified students from my school are applying as well will change things for me significantly in terms of admission? Like, even if I'm well above range for them in every way, but so are the others from my school, will that equal a rejection possibly when I would have been easily accepted otherwise?

Ask you GC how many are usually accepted each year. Maybe the total applicants are in range. Colleges often do look at each HS as a group, although they will evaluate each person individually.

Do what every you can to let the school know it is a top choice for you. It may not be obvious to them if you are way above their average scores. Visit if you can. Talk about this in interview if you have one. Contact any professors if you have an area of interest that you have special skills in. If they have a why Goucher essay, be very specific and tell them.

corman, what hs do you go to?

Abington Friends School, you?

And in response to Bettina: I pretty much have been doing that. I visited a few weeks ago, did an interview with my regional representative when he was in the area and told him they were among my top three, if not my top choice school. I'm also doing an overnight in a few weeks. Also while I was visiting I spoke with the head of the chem department, who was a very nice man and quite helpful. I found out recently that two people from my school actually went there last year, and a few others were accepted, but yeah, I'm just hoping it doesn't create a problem.
