Multiple waitlists

How does it work if you're on multiple waitlists? Let's say there are 3 colleges, CMU, UNC, and Vandy.

CMU is the school I'm enrolled at right now but I'll possibly choose other schools given the chance because CMU didn't give me any aid and is very expensive.

Vandy's my 2nd choice and I got waitlisted. If I were accepted to all 3 I would possibly choose Vandy over CMU but not UNC

UNC's my 1st choice and I got waitlisted. If I were accepted to all 3 I would choose UNC over Vandy and CMU

Let's say I am somehow accepted to Vandy in early May. I accept the offer and cancel my enrollment at CMU. However, a month later, I am accepted at UNC. Would I be allowed to cancel my enrollment at Vandy and enroll at UNC? I know this is really far-fetched because chances are, I won't get into either Vandy or UNC. However, in the case that I get into both, I'm wondering if I'll be able to choose one over the other after enrolling.

Thanks and sorry if this didn't make sense =D

I am in a similar situation and would be curious to see what people have to say. I think that you would be able to cancel the offer from Vandy if UNC came through. That would explain why wait list offers come in through June, I assume.

You can always put down a deposit to enroll and then decide not to attend. However, you are likely to lose your deposit. This is just the nature of WLs.

What is frowned upon is putting down multiple deposits, thus taking up more seats than you will use while others are waiting. But if you are accepted off of a WL and decline your earlier enrollment immediately, that’s not a problem. And it doesn’t matter if it’s your first or second WL acceptance as long as you always de-commit as soon as you put your deposit down on a different school.
