Multivariable, Linear Algebra, Diff EQ's, and Discrete in Junior Year?

I took the above classes last year. I am applying to HYPS this year and was wondering how rare this is? I know many people take Multivariable Calculus senior year. Also, I am applying at Yale EA and want to know, since they are more known for humanities, if my interest in math and science would be beneficial. Thank you for your comments guys! I'm a little new to this site.

It's not common for sure, but it's not THAT rare. I personally took three of those four classes by the end of my junior year, and know of several others who have done the same. :high five: But know that the world is big and there are students who have done that. (and also know that not all schools will give you credit/placement for your work... i'm not asking for any past bc).

There are rumors that since Yale is building up its sciences, applied sciences, and engineering (?) departments (and schools?), they do like us mathysciencey kids. That being said, a passion for anything bodes well.. math and science included.

Weren't you applying MIT EA? (just wondering)

no, that must be someone else because I am not applying to MIT. Thanks for your reply though.

It's pretty uncommon. It isn't a hook or anything, but it's impressive, even for Yale. You won't get brownie points for applying to a very "humanities" school like Yale (which is excellent in sciences as well); it's just that it's a good accomplishment.

You asked how rare, and there is a bit of data on that.

David Bressoud's Launchings from the CUPM Curriculum Guide

My S took MV, DiffEq, Discrete and a calc-based stats course junior year. They were all one semester each. Took LinAlg and some other math courses senior year. He was not alone, though he probably enjoyed them more than anyone else who was taking them.

Don't take math courses because you think it'll improve your chances -- take them because you LIKE them. Colleges will appreciate that you have taken a rigorous curriculum -- but having those courses on your junior year transcript don't guarantee you anything.

Counting Down,

I took the math courses because I wanted to. Nobody forced me to, actually quite the opposite (my mather teacher told me to take less). This semester I am taking Mathematical Logic and Complex Analysis. Thank you and everyone else for responding and I wish you guys the best of luck if you are applying this year. :)

At the schools you mentioned, it's definitely an accomplishment but I don't think it would be rare. I'm going to Chicago in the fall and I already know a few students who have taken similar courses to you (sometimes more) that are fretting about Honors analysis...

Sally teaches Honors Analysis right? I heard that course is crazy.
