Music and languages at NYU.

My D is interested in double majoring in music and languages/linguistics at some academically AND musically strong university. She preffers it to be somewhere in the big city with lots of cultural opportunities ... so, NYU came to mind. :-)

But the look at their web-site caused me major confusion: it looks like studiing music and languages at NYU is possible in 2 different colleges. I can't understand: which of NYU's colleges is better for music and languages: CAS or Steinhardt? Both have music major and foreign languages, but it looks that the music at Steinhardt is more serious (you need to audition), but opportunities with languages and linguistics are better at CAS (but there IS some "foreign language education" at Steinhardt).

The web-site says you can only apply to one college, one major. Does it mean that not passing music audition for Steinhardt means you are denied admission to NYU? Is it possible to apply to one college to NYU and, if admitted, transfer to another? Can one declare music major and audtioin for it at Steinhardt, later, ones accepted to NYU? Can you double-major between two different colleges?

Btw, which one of the two (CAS or Steinhardt) is harder to get into (academically)?

I believe the Steinhardt music program is music performance, education, etc, while the CAS one is more theory/history. Steinhardt does NOT offer a language or linguistics minor; foreign language education is probably just what it says - if you want to teach a foreign language, that's your major. However, according to this link http://nyu.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6784015161/m/9431099781 it may be possible for your daughter to be in Steinhardt and double major in a CAS department, but you should ask an academic advisor. Sometimes double majoring is only possible with certain majors. However, she could always do a minor.

Yes, if you apply to Steinhardt and you are not admitted, you will not be admitted to NYU. The only exception is if you're referred to the General Studies Program. There is an option to transfer between colleges in NYU, but it is not guaranteed, so you shouldn't rely on it.

Generally, people say that CAS is harder to get into academically, but I doubt the standards are much lower for Steinhardt. Also, if your daughter wanted to do a music performance major, her audition will weigh as much as her academics.

Backing youko here. CAS Music is musicology. Steinhardt is for actually playing the instrument (well). Learning a foreign language is CAS. Teaching one is Steinhardt.
