Music as an extracurricular?

Well, I am not in band or any orchestra at school or anywhere else.
But I have really enjoyed playing the flute so I am still taking private lessons and doing Certificate of Merit-which if you do for a certain amount of time you can put as a little side thing-but is it really worth pursuing and putting time into if that isn't my main thing?
Should I just focus on something I am really passionate about? I like music-but its not my priority and I do not want to waste valuable time if it isn't really going to boost my extra currics. Thanks!

Since when is pursuing an artistic hobby that you “really enjoy” a waste of valuable time?

Just do what you want. Don’t be the guy that only does stuff to get into ivies. I know those people, and I’m not particularly fond of them.

i am thinking it over because playing music isn’t exactly something im going to do for the rest of my life-or even into college. it would just be a high school hobby for about two more years and i would play at recitals and put awards on my college apps but thats all i would get from it.

If you enjoy music, keep doing it. I go to a magnet school for the arts (think Fame) where I major is visual art (and spend three hours a day in art classes), yet plan to not pursue it as a career or major in college. Why? Because I enjoy it. Enter a few competitions or something along those lines so you have something to throw on your resume. But really it comes down to enjoying life. Also on a side note, playing music is great for things like brain development, so really you would get more out of it then you realize.

thanks artsygirl13-that was the best thought out answer.

Don’t worry, even if you don’t win awards, colleges will see how much time you’ve spent learning, practicing, etc. as commitment. From your post, it sounds like it isn’t the main point, but I felt it was a bit relevant.

It’s great that you enjoy music! When I was younger I hated playing my instrument (first violin, then cello) but gradually I could bear it. Now I’m taking a bit of a hiatus since I have no time ( :frowning: ) but I will probably continue sometime soon.

But definitely go for it if you enjoy it - there is no harm in pursuing these types of activities as long as you have the time for it.

my two cents, quidditchcat

You gain more than you’d think from playing music…
