Daughter plays flute pretty well but is not interested in a music major. What sort of musical groups can she participate in? Do any of them travel in the U.S. or overseas on concert tours? Would she be totally shut out because of those who do want to major in music?

I'm in a similar position. I play clarinet, but not spectacularly, and I don't plan on majoring in music, but I don't want to give it up entirely.

Denquist,

Music is a pretty small major here are Barnard, so she definitely won't be shut out!

As for groups... Flute Choir! It's really a lot of fun, and we're quite a relaxed bunch. There's an activities fair in the beginning of the year, where she can check us out. This year we have nine people, and we put on two concerts a year. We're really going to need people next year, because a lot of our members are going abroad/graduating. So if your daughter's interested have her contact us!

Besides flute choir, there is orchestra, and wind ensemble. Both require an audition. Then there's marching band, which is also very laid back.

Columbia has an orchestra that's open to all Columbia and Barnard students by audition. Since there's no performance major at either school, just a B.A. degree with a concentration in music, there are likely to be plenty of non-majors in the orchestra.

Does anybody know how these auditions work?

Here's the link to the orchestra's audition page:
