Hi everyone, I’m a junior in CA that is thinking about applying to colleges on the east coast and I was just wondering what the music program is like at Bowdoin? I play viola and I want to play in chamber groups as well as an orchestra, so how is Bowdoin’s music scene like compared to other colleges and LACs (like Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, etc.)? Do many people play instruments or are involved in music? Are there lots of string quartet/trios or things of that sort?
Thanks!
Bowdoin has a healthy music program, mainly known for its a capella groups, and a very new arts center that underscores the school’s commitment to the arts. That being said, Bowdoin isn’t particularly well known for its music programs and is pretty much on par with other strong LACs in the Northeast. If you wanted to go to a school with a real focus on music and exceptionally strong programs, I would suggest looking at Vassar or Oberlin.
Bowdoin has a GREAT music program! One of the many reasons I choose the school. I have played the violin since I have been 5, and I knew I wanted to continue with music in college. I looked into many LACs, and I found Bowdoin to have the strongest department of the schools you listed. I partake in both chamber group and orchestra on campus, and I have loved both. I would say a large number of Bowdoin students are involved in music in some way (whether it is orchestra, private lessons, middle eastern ensemble, jazz, chorus, band, a cappella etc) There are lots of chamber groups!
