Obviously, brown is a great school overall. However, I was wondering how strong the music program is (faculty, opportunities, classes, etc…). Can anyone help me?

[Brown University Department of Music](<a href=“Music | Brown University”>Music | Brown University)

^ LOL. like any college’s departmental website is going to give an unbiased assessment of its own program.

Hey, well, I figured it was a starting point…

I was going to point you to the music majors’ forum, but it doesn’t seem to have a lot about Brown. One poster (Violadad) reported a negative reputation for Brown when commenting about music programs at the Ivies. That said, whether it is good or good enough or no good probably depends on what you want out of it. Sure the web site will be rah-rah, but it can still be a good place to start. Do they have the kind of ensembles you would want to participate in? How do they sound? Do they play music you would enjoy playing? Do they have courses you would be interested in? Check ratemyprofessors.com to see what students say about the people who teach those courses.

Try to visit when you can observe a rehearsal and/or a class. (I realize that might not work.)

Just one caveat-- Brown students pretty much don’t use ratemyprofessors because we have our own internally group that does evaluation work-- The Critical Review. However, this site is only available to members of the Brown community.

Modestmelody – this is the first I’ve heard of The Critical Review. My son will be starting at Brown in the Fall, so he has a Banner ID number, etc. How can he access this review of professors? Thanks in advance…

If he has his log in info, [Critical Review Online](http://www.thecriticalreview.org).

Also, don’t forget to use [Welcome - Mocha](http://brown.mochacourses.com) to find your classes-- it’s way better than Banner.

Thanks so much – those are both great resources!
