Does anyone know how good Columbia's music program is? I play the cello and really want to double major. I got waitlisted but I'm still curious.

I just remember walking past Dodge Hall (?) in the center of campus and always hearing pianos, violins and cellos playing all day long. I was a trumpet player, by the way. Never heard a brass instrument there.

[The Department of Music at Columbia: Yesterday and Today | The Department of Music at Columbia University](http://music.columbia.edu/about)

with some highlights

“the Music Department maintains and has even expanded its disciplinary depth and diversity. In a recent survey of graduate programs in music in the U.S., Columbia’s was one of only a dozen rated “distinguished.””

“The number of undergraduates majoring in music at Columbia has grown sevenfold since the mid-1990s. Music Humanities continues to attract nearly 700 students every semester. The University Orchestra has toured to great acclaim. Each year the Department’s Music Performance Program enables hundreds of students to receive academic credit for lessons and chamber ensembles, including jazz, bluegrass, klezmer, and Japanese gagaku ensembles; their teachers are among the best musicians in New York. Columbia has also broadened musical opportunities for its students through an innovative exchange program with the Juilliard School; qualified students at either institution can enroll for courses or lessons for credit at the other.”

well they don’t have a performance degree, but if you were looking for general music stuff like theory and music history or whatnot, i heard it was pretty good =)

great, thanks for your help

Anyone experienced with the jazz program specifically?

I want to play Jazz trumpet. I’ll probably get some on the side group together, idk. Is Juliard (sp?) affialiated with CU? How close is it anyway?

Fastfood, are you planning on a music major? Besides jazz, what kinds of music do you like?

nononoo I’m planning on poli sci. I’m not even very good at trumpet; I just love jazz. I don’t discriminate against other types of music when I’m listening, but rarely do I enjoy playing classical. idk, I just want a low pressure jazz ensemble.
