Anyone have info about the conservatory of music at Gettysburg College? How does it compare to to other conservatories/schools of music? What is the "typical" student profile? How do the conservatory students fit in with the rest of the student body?

I know there have been at least a couple of threads about Gettysburg in the last couple of years. I think you might find them if you use the search function (not my strength, or I’d give you links!).

My D auditioned there on viola a couple of years back and was offered a nice scholarship, but the school wasn’t a match for her. It came highly recommended by people we trust, though, and her experiences with the faculty during sample lessons were very positive. On a personal note, we loved the campus and the town and it seems like a wonderful place to spend four years.

There are a few threads about Sunderman Conservatory here, but they are older so employ a good search engine and see what you can find regarding student experiences.
It’s not a top tier school and probably not in the second tier either, but they have been trying to build their reputation over the past years. The area is lovely, especially if you’re a history buff! Again, it depends upon your instrument and the teacher since some departments within the conservatory are bound to be stronger than others

They have wonderful facilities and a lot of great extras at Gettysburg, however, some of their instrument specific professors are not full time to the college and actually teach at other schools as well. For my daughter, despite really liking the campus and the facilities and the people on campus, not having a full time bass professor was enough to make her remove it from her list.

I realize that this is an old thread, but hopefully someone searching for new information will stumble across my post. I was a member of the first graduating class of the Sunderman Conservatory, starting in the fall of the Conservatory’s first year. I cannot recommend the school highly enough. In other threads, several parents have speculated on how many graduates are still “in music” after school; I can say with authority that our rates are comparable, or even higher, than other conservatory programs. I graduated in 2010 and immediately entered a top-5 program for my doctorate in music. This was largely in part to Gettysburg’s stellar academic reputation and the recommendations of the faculty at the Sunderman Conservatory, who are highly regarded experts in their field.

The program is small, but students receive excellent individualized attention and receive amazing opportunities to solo, gig, or perform in wonderful venues, ranging from Carnegie Hall to Gettysburg’s own Majestic Theater. As a freshman, my professor brought me with her to a chamber festival in Spain, and Gettysburg helped pay for this experience!

Regarding your concern about adjunct professors who are at other schools – while I understand your daughter’s concern, this is also a terrific opportunity because many of the professors are full-time performers in other cities, or travel extensively for their performing careers. You don’t need to see your studio teacher more than once a week, and they are always accessible via email or phone.

Please feel free to message me with specific questions about the program.

Orangeandblue10 - my D will be at Gettysburg for January 18 audition. If accepted her plan is to minor in VP. Do you have any personal experience with VP? When we visited in August, D fell in love with the school and spoke extensively with the theater department. Auditions will be her first experience with the conservatory. Thank you!
