My S applied, and was accepted. We are considering attending admitted students day soon.
He is a pretty serious music student ( Jazz bass) and was wondering if anyone had some insight into the music program at Skidmore. Waitlisted at NYU, which has the jazz, but not the spot for him just yet.
If music is great there, it may be a decision.
Any help would be appreciated.
@crescentmom - I don’t know a lot about the music program/music major but I do know that Skidmore is dedicated to the arts in general (my son will be majoring in studio art). The Arthur Zankel Music Center was built in 2010 and the school seems pretty serious about providing a modern and technologically up-to-date venue for music and musical performances. We are going up for the April 15 accepted students day (we already committed; son got in ED). I suggest going up and seeing if you can meet with someone from the Music Department to gain more insight about opportunities both within the major and for extracurricular opportunities.
A music family I know (one parent is former singer and the other a current composer), with both parents graduates of conservatories, told me the music program was fantastic for their kid, a very recent grad of Skidmore, and one parent said to me, “I wish I’d gone there instead of X conservatory”. Seems like a credible recommendation. The voice training may be oriented to operatic voices and operatic ambitions rather than oriented to other voice types, as evidenced by the way they run the Filene Scholarship for voice candidates.
